Tallahassee - Specifically FSU

My son has been accepted to FSU and we promised he could visit the campus once he was accepted. We are waiting to hear from someone in the dept. he'd interested in as far as meeting dates go, then we'll finalize plans. I am hoping for Jan 22-25 if we can get all appointments set up.

We'll be flying from MA and will arrive mid-afternoon on Sat. We'll have all day Sunday to ourselves to explore. Monday we'll do the official tour and (hopefully) meet with someone in his dept. We'll fly out Tuesday late morning.

The hotel I'm looking at is the Four Points by Sheraton which is offering a special rate of $65. I'd rather have a bit of a drive (5 miles) and stay at a decent hotel - while being budget-minded.

I'd love feedback on the hotel I'm thinking about and also ideas for our free day on Sunday. Thanks for your suggestions!

Congratulations to your son!

I have never stayed at that hotel, but I do have one very important tip. Tallahassee is a very small town. If the legislature is going to be in session or if there is a home football game scheduled, there will be no hotel rooms available for months. Maybe longer for football games. I don't think either will happen on the dates you have given, but I'd make the reservation ASAP and then cancel if your plans change or you find another place to stay.

The legislative session does not start until March 8, so you are safe there.

And Tallahassee is hardly a "very small town", although it might feel somewhat like one. Orlando and Tallahassee have similar areas (about 100 square miles, or twice the land area of Boston). Tallahassee's population is around 175,000 (compared to Orlando's 235,000 and Boston's 645,000) and total Leon County population is 275,000. Tallahassee lacks the suburbs the other two cities have, of course.

If you haven't already, check out http://www.visittallahassee.com/ for ideas.

It won't be as warm as Orlando or Miami but should be nicer than New England (average high is in the 60s and low in the 40s that time of year - but it could be 15 degrees warmer or colder!).

When we stayed in Tallahassee for a wedding we stayed at the Cabot Lodge and it was great. Breakfast and afternoon drinks and snacks are included. I don't know exactly how far it is from FSU, but we went to the rehearsal dinner there and it was not too far.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Cabot Lodges too. I used to stay at the one on North Monroe, but that must have closed or changed ownership. Now it's only the one on Thomasville Rd. left.

The Cabot Lodge and the Sheraton you're talking about are in the same general area on the north side of town. What general kinds of things do you have in mind for your free day - getting to know Tallahassee proper or seeing the larger area? Depending on the weather you could have a lovely drive down to the Gulf or to Apalachicola...or you could go up to Thomasville GA, which is closer (about a half hour drive from where you'll be staying).
