Taking our granddaughters to Europe

Thank you WallyKringer, Barbara in Ct., Crefloors, nbujic, nytraveler, janisj, missypie, papagena, hopscotch, niunia, hicksma2001, and Lori.

I so appreciate your replies. We are now re-working our trip and will probably be in London 4 days (1 to sleep of the travel) and then go to Paris for 4 days and take a sleeper train to Rome for 4 days. Thank you niunia for the 'touristy menu'. We are going to do that while in London, see The Tower of London, Big Ben, ride the trolleys, etc. Princess Diana stuff, and of course Harrods. Then the chunnel to Paris in order to arrive for one of our granddaughter's 16th birthday. And do things there (if anyone has suggestions we would be happy) and then on to Rome. Looking for suggestions there also. Thanks again for your invaluable assistance.
Joyce

Joyce, glad we could be of help, but I don't know if you realize that this post is on the US Board. Go back over to the Europe Board and you'll get more suggestions that you can shake a stick at, I'm sure.

Joyce
the Princess Diana stuff is not in London it is about 90 minutes away by road at Althorp in Northamptonshire, also there are no trolleys in London anymore!
After Paris I would suggest visiting Venice before it sinks and then Rome

Joyce, If you see this please repost on the Europe board. I'm sure there will be lots of responses for you. You might want to think about going to the Eiffel Tower in the early evening and watch the lights all over the city come on -- it's truly a gorgeous sight. As for London, with a limited amount of time, you might considere the Hop On/Hop Off Bus for an overview of the major sights. If you plan on going to the Tower try and get out there early (when they open), it gets very crowded as the day goes along. You can buy Tower tickets at any Tube station by the way.

Perhaps Joyce was referring to the Princess Diana 'stuff' at Kensington Palace rather than Althorp.

prue
there is nothing at Kensington palace relating to Diana

There is a very good collection of dresses belonging to her, and other members of the Royal Family.

hopefully jbotazo will post this follow up to her original thread over on Europe -

but dabber: "there is nothing at Kensington palace relating to Diana" What on Earth ARE you talking about. Of course there is.

janisj and prue
there is a collection of Dresses on display along with photos of Diana by Mario Testino but this is a temporary display with the dresses from Althorp

You may well be right but I last saw the exhibition in 2001 and I gather it is still there at present!

janisj Jan 29th, 2007 09:47 PM

There is a current "temporary" exhibit (sched from 2005 - 2007)

But Princess Diana items/dresses/gowns have been on display for years.

When you go to Paris, you should see at least one art museum (unless your granddaughters are both under 10). I recommend the Musee D'Orsay, built in an old train station across the Seine kitty-corner from the Louvre. The D'Orsay contains all the impressionist art, along with an interesting collection of sculpture. I believe a lot of people go to the Louvre and ask themselves, "Where are all the Van Goghs and Monets?"
