Tahoe in late Oct.
 

I am going to Tahoe in late Oct for the first time. We are not gamblers or skiers. What is there to do?

My favorite thing to do at Lake Tahoe in October is hike, bike ride, walk along the lake - basically relaxing and enjoying the scenery. It's the low season, so there wont be a lot of people around. There may be snow at lake level, but probably not. It will probably be chilly, so curling up by hte fire with a cup of hot chocolate is always nice.<BR><BR>You could also take a boat cruise, drive around the lake, go horseback riding, or go over to Truckee. <BR><BR>What area of the lake are you staying in?

We are going to be spending a week at Lake Tahoe in early October. <BR><BR>I'm planning on spending one day just driving all around the lake and taking in the different views. If you're a big Bonanza fan there is the Ponderosa Ranch.<BR><BR>I'm planning on a day trip to Virgina City. I also have long day trips planned to go to Pyramid Lake and maybe another one down to Bodie Historical State Park. Hwy 395 is known for it's aspen color at this time of the year.<BR><BR>Two days will be a conference we are going to.<BR><BR>Utahtea

Since most visitors stay at south shore I'm assuming you'll be there. There is lots to do if the weather is dry. <BR><BR>Take the Gondola from near the Embassy Suites (south shore). The views are awesome. Hike around when you reach the top.<BR><BR>Go north on 89 and left onto Fallen Leaf Lake Road. There are several easy hikes here or you can just hang out at Fallen Leaf Lake.<BR><BR>Easy Hike to Angora Lakes: Take a left off 89 onto the Fallen Leaf Lake road then left at the first paved road that forks on your left it's "Tahoe" something. Then right onto Forest Service Road 1214. Take it to the end parking lot and take the short hike to the Lakes. The road 1214 alternates between paved and gravely but it's fine.<BR><BR>The road around Fallen Leaf is basically 1 lane sjo there's alot of sharing going on. Probably nopt too bad in Oct. If you stay on Fallen Leaf Lake Road and go all the way to the parking lot at the end you will find a small lake and a trailhead that takes you to a historic spring resort. Easy short hike. <BR><BR>In that same vacinity is an other easy hike, Morain Trail. Fallen Leaf Lake Road to approximately two-thirds of a mile to Fallen Leaf Campground. Drive through the campground and park just before campsite #75 on the right.Look for the trailhead sign near the parking area.<BR><BR>Spend some time at the Tallac Historic Site in Camp Richardson.<BR><BR>See Emerald Bay.<BR><BR>Take a lake cruise on one of the boats from either the marina at south shore or at Zephyr Cove.<BR><BR>Grab a lunch at Yellow Submarine which makes great sub sandwiches.<BR><BR>Diiner at Evans or Cafe Fiore if it's a special occasion. <BR><BR>Have fun.

We are staying on the South shore. I've heard that is the better area??? We are going because we've heard it is beautiful. The time of year is my concern, as it is not hot enough for the beach, but not cold enough for snow. We would like to do something on the water, as well as hike. Suzie--thanks for the input.

South shore is fine - whether it's the "better" area depends on your perspective. There are lots of casinos at Stateline, and South Lake Tahoe is a nice town right on the highway with hotels, motels, cabins, restaurants, and so on. <BR><BR>Lake Tahoe is beautiful, one of the most beautiful places on earth. <BR><BR>If you want to do something on the water, you might consider a cruise on the Tahoe Queen or MS Dixie II - both paddlewheelers. The cruise to Emerald Bay is esspecially nice. There are daytime and evenning cruises.

Definitely take a cruise on the Lake. The M.S. Dixie and the Tahoe Queen are both great tours. Be sure to take the tour that goes to Emerald Bay.
