Sylvia's In NYC...Anyone try it?
I am anxious to try Sylvia's in NYC when I visit. I have heard mixed reviews, however.
I do love southern style food, in particular the more African-American influenced food.....so I was wondering if anyone with tastes similar to mine had been there and what was their experience. I haven't had good homecooked soul food in a long time, and though I am tempted to get a steak for my bday, I am also contemplating eating at Sylvia's for my bday dinner. Or should I just make it for lunch? |
I had a great time at Sylvia's, but there is no doubt it is touristy. Like any "famous" restaurant, it probably is less "authentic" than it once was.
Still, I had great chicken and waffles, as well as great greens. |
My S&BIL tried it twice on their recent trip from the UK. They said they really enjoyed it.

They went for lunch.

Sylvia's is good, nothing wrong with it at all, been there a few times (great breakfast), but the absolute BEST southern food I've ever had is at Amy Ruth's on 116th Street. It's become quite popular these days so to avoid a wait try and get there on a weeknight.
In my opinion, this is a "not to miss" restaurant in NYC if you're into home-cooked soul food. John |
Well - I'm not an expert on Southern food (in fact, it's quite an adventrure for me) but have been to Sylvia's several times and always enjoyed it. Don;t know about authnticity - but it was very tasty, reasonably priced - and you can often see "someone" there.

African American influenced food?
Do you mean soul food? Southern? Low Country? Yes, Sylvia's is good but it has been a while since I've eaten there. |
