Swimming pool near NYC
 

It's going to be scorcher here this weekend, and my air conditioner is on the fritz. A friend me offered the use of his car, and that has me searching for a swimming pool somewhere within about an hour or so of NYC .
Not a NY city pool (though I've heard about the Red Hook and Astoria pools) but someplace a little more "country" (or even suburban!) that allows non -residents.
Help!

Why don't you just head to the beach? You can get a moderate hotel off a highway or inland.

The beach is much cooler than a pool because of the ocean breezes.

The Atlantic Ocean.

Or the Long Island Sound.

Why don't you just head out to Jones Beach at an early hour each day.

I did think about the beach BUT not sure if "moderate price" is what I'm seeing in hotels for the area (let alone a Saturday night availability). Beach/ shore traffic is another thing I'm not sure I want to deal with
Also, FYI, many Long Island beaches are closed, as of now. Heavy rains this past week have upped the bacteria count.

Any pool ideas folks?

Not a pool but I hear that the Hudson River is great for floating on a tube soaking in the sun :-).

sorry...it's 9:30 and I am ready for the weekend.

There's a huge pool in Central Park.

But all public pools will be packed, really really crowded, and not as pleasant as the beach (which will also be crowded, of course, but not as bad).

Jones Beach Park has 2 pools.

There you go again, looking for love in all the wrong places.

I Googled "new york city parks swimming pool" and immediately got a long list of pools.

There was a public pool near where I used to live on the East Side of Manhattan, but nothing about it appealed to me.

We used to take the subway out to Rockaway--it was great fun, and that's why I recommended it.

There are private swim clubs in NJ, LI, New Rochelle, etc, but they usually don't allow walk-ins unles syou are a member's guest.

About an hour and a half away. Lake Candlewood in Danbury/New Fairfield/New Milford.

A little farther approx 2 hours. Lake Lillinonah in New Milford,
Shepaug River in Washington.

Crowded New York pools are massive bacteria traps. Do you particularly enjoy impetigo and diarrhea?

Try the "Bronx Riviera" up at Orchard.

Go to the web sites for New York State Parks, check which have pools (Jones Beach does - but will be crowded) and if they're operating.

Private clubs will NOT let you in on a scorcher weekend - since they'll be mobbed with their own members.

You can buy a one day pass or maybe get a freebie at one of the health clubs in Manhattan that has a pool to "test" the club.

Despite the nice offer of the car, I think you're far better trying to find a private pool in the city. Any of the "public" pools outside the city will be mobbed and traffic will be grim.

I agree with McL, but public transportation is also an option of course.

Does Rye Playland have any pools or water parks?

Wherever you decide to go, leave early. Beaches, lakes, state parks, etc., get crowded and/or filled up early on hot-weather weekends like this one.
I'd avoid Rye Playland.

What about the pool on the roof of the Parker Meridian? I do love pool swimming and wish there were more alternatives here in Manhattan! You can swim at some city pools when they first open and crowds may not be too bad, especially at the indoor ones.

I think Bear Mountain has a public pool. They're generally pretty skeevy. You just know all of those kids are peeing in it, and you know you're not the only one who has this idea! If you're adventurous what about a water park? Dorney or Camel Beach in PA? Also if you drive out to the Jim Thorpe area in PA you can go to Beltzville Lake which is HUGE and you can swim. It's also always a lot cooler there than here. NYH&R has a private beach in Westchester that I haven't tried, but if you know a member it might be nice.

I hate to rub it in, but I will be by the private pool in a development in PA. For future reference, if you rent a house out in one of the places that has a pool you can use all of the ammenities.

OK, got the idea. I guess adults + pool + cleanliness + close to NY is too much to ask. This was a tough request. Thanks for your ideas.
I may just be forced to go visit some cousins w/rugrats in PA and hang out at their town pool
