Sweetest Day - any travel plans

What plans does everyone have for Sweetest Day? We live in the suburbs of Chicago and are spending the night downtown. We are going to Gibson's for dinner and plan to hang out at Hugo's, Jilly's, etc. Maybe we will get some early Christmas shopping done during the day.

When is Sweetest day? If it's today, my plans are to help with homework, drive 7 yo to religion class and then drive both kids to dad's work where he'll take over while I see a play with girlfriends. Apparently I need more planning time to create the right mood. Thanks for the heads up.

I've never heard of this holiday. I didn't know about Bosses Day until today, and it was yesterday.

Beth Oct 17th, 2001 08:51 AM

I'm going to go out on a limb here, I could easily be wrong. IMHO Sweetest Day is definitely more celebrated in the north and on the east coast. Growing up a Southern girl, I had never heard of it, until I had a college roomate from Detroit who celebrated it. When I went to grad school in DC, there were many there who celebrated it as well. I don't know about the west coast or west area. I now live in Chicago and see decorations at HAllmark, cards and more talk about it here as well. Its almost as big as Valentine's Day here. And yes I hope my hubby remembers meven if it is a regional thing!

Beth -

What are you giving your husband for Sweetest Day?

Beth Oct 17th, 2001 09:12 AM

I am cooking dinner for him , which is a rarity as I DO NOT cook. I am also making him his favorite cake, coconut with candy sprinkles (hearts in this case) on top. Will probably give him a card too. Nothing too expensive or outlandish.

Does celebrating a Hallmark holiday on tourist/suburbanite infested Rush St really belong under the heading "travel plans"? Other than the steak at Gibson's, I'd say it belongs under the label of "self-inflicted torture."
Beth,

I suspect your hubby would prefer something else for dessert, if ya know what I mean.lol That would make for a sweet day indeed.

I'm in New York State...never heard of "Sweetest Day". What is it?

Elizabeth Oct 17th, 2001 12:48 PM

I have absolutely never heard of Sweetest Day. What is it? Does it exist? How is it observed? (and again, also, does it exist?)

xxx Oct 17th, 2001 12:56 PM

It definetly exists in the midwest. But probably is a "hallmark holiday". But if it means flowers and a nice night out, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, sometimes we need excuses.

Ang Oct 17th, 2001 01:04 PM

Maybe instead of a northern thing its a midwest thing? At any rate it does exist, just go to your local Hallmark or any card shop and you will see cards for Sweetest Day as with any holiday. It is supposed to be a day to celebrate the person whom you call your "sweetest" very similar ro Valentine's Day as someone before said. People usually get boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse or even parent or child a "gift" or celebrate with them.

Frank Oct 17th, 2001 01:08 PM

Reporting in from NYC, never heard of it!

Brittany Oct 17th, 2001 01:14 PM

Reporting here from Madison Wisconsin. We celebrate Sweetest Day but evidently not as extravagantly as some (those Chicago people LOL) its nowhere on the level of Valentine's Day. I have always heard "Sweets for my Sweetest" on Sweetest Day. People usually bake cookies or give candy or chocolates or do a cake like above for their loved one's and of course the card. Hallmark has a monopoly on these kinds of holidays.

Not to brag, but we will be in Maui for Sweetest Day!! Can't Wait!!!!

confused Oct 17th, 2001 01:35 PM

born near Philadelphia, lived there till age 18. went to school in DC for 7 years. Now I'm living in NY and I have NEVER heard of this holiday. Today is the first time! Is someone pulling our collective legs? An east coast thing? I've never lived anywhere else!
