We saw this in Boston yesterday afternoon. We knew ahead of time that Charlotte d'Amboise was replacing Christina Applegate due to her broken ankle. Then, heard/read that Charlotte was scheduled to continue on during the Broadway previews. Read in the Boston Globe yesterday morning that the Broadway run had been cancelled due to lukewarm reviews for Christina Applegate and poor advance ticket sales.
We loved the show! Charlotte d'Amboise was just fabulous. Magnificent singer and dancer. (We'd enjoyed her enormously, previously, in Boston, as Roxie in "Chicago" with Jasmie Guy...) And, Denis O'Hare was positively brilliant.
Overall, however, this production just did not impress with "Broadway smash" qualities. It wasn't for lack of talent, or scenery, or costumes (which were fabulous), etc. And, Janine LaManna (Nickie) and Kyra DaCosta (Helene) were absolutely sensational.
I can't really explain it, except that most of the story was just a bit too silly and impausible and the musical numbers were just not rousing enough.
