Sweet Charity NYC

This just in.....broadway run cancelled due to Applegates injury.

Patrick Mar 25th, 2005 04:46 PM

What injury?

shaz60 Mar 25th, 2005 04:47 PM

She has been replaced in Boston by Charlotte D'Ambroise due to a broken foot.

If it was cancelled, it wasn't because of Applegate's injury, no matter what the official announcement. The out-of-town reviews weren't that good, and that includes pre-injury performances.
Patrick, Christine Applegate was injured a few weeks ago during a Chicago performance and was scheduled to be out until at least the NY opening.

We saw this in Boston yesterday afternoon. We knew ahead of time that Charlotte d'Amboise was replacing Christina Applegate due to her broken ankle. Then, heard/read that Charlotte was scheduled to continue on during the Broadway previews. Read in the Boston Globe yesterday morning that the Broadway run had been cancelled due to lukewarm reviews for Christina Applegate and poor advance ticket sales.

We loved the show! Charlotte d'Amboise was just fabulous. Magnificent singer and dancer. (We'd enjoyed her enormously, previously, in Boston, as Roxie in "Chicago" with Jasmie Guy...) And, Denis O'Hare was positively brilliant.

Overall, however, this production just did not impress with "Broadway smash" qualities. It wasn't for lack of talent, or scenery, or costumes (which were fabulous), etc. And, Janine LaManna (Nickie) and Kyra DaCosta (Helene) were absolutely sensational.

I can't really explain it, except that most of the story was just a bit too silly and impausible and the musical numbers were just not rousing enough.

Sorry, Jasmine Guy, who was awesome!

And, that would be plausible...whew!

This just in...Sweet Charity to come to Broadway after all.

Charlotte d'Amboise will star beginning April 11 with Christina Applegate returning April 18.

Considering the out-of-town reviews and the NYC advance sale, the producers sure have guts....or money to burn!
