Thanks for the tip about the alligators. I have seen them before when I was in Charleston (rather one of the plantations outside the city), but was more interested in the swampy part and general area of the swamp.

We go to NOLA annually for fun and love our time there. I also travel there on business a couple of times a year, but usually stay in Metarie for those trips.
Stay in the Quarter. Follow the music to find fun. Eat when you feel like it and try things you've never had before. Stroll Magazine Street and buy some pottery or local crafts. Then for a contrast, window shop on Royal Street at the fine antiques and heirloom jewelry stores. They have some museum quality things in some of those shops!
Last year, the first week of October, it rained EVERY day that we were there. We made the best of it and the beautiful hotel we stayed in provided umbrellas. We loved the Waldorf Astoria Roosevelt hotel. Great location and a Jeff Besh restaurant.
Go to Frenchman Street. Snug Harbor hosts Wynton Marsalis' father, Ellis Marsalis, performs there a couple of Fridays a month. Have your concierge request tickets to be held at the door. They don't take reservations.
Go to Preservation Hall for real jazz. Buy tourist art in front of Jackson Square. Take a walking tour of the Garden District or the cemetaries. If you're adventuresome, try meeting up for a ghost tour at Bar Lafitte at the far end of Bourbon street. New Orleans has some great history and eerie tales.
Don't miss going to Plantation Alley and driving River Road. Stop at a few of the plantations, but be sure to check the hours first because some are closed on certain days.
Enjoy!

We were in No this past March. We went on a swamp tour to Honey Island and loved it! The company,Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp tours picked us up at our hotel and drove us to the island. It was a fasinating look at the Eco system and how it is being saved. They give tours year round. www.honeyislandswamp.com
We also loved the cemetery tour and would definetly do it again.
One night we took a taxi out to Rock-n-Bowl to listen to and dance to Zydeco music.
