Surfrider Doubletree in Miami
 

I checked trip advisor on this hotel and the reviews are mixed. Has anyone stayed here recently? Is it clean? Other opinions?

It isn't the Surfrider but the Doubletree SurfCOMBER. The Surfrider is a different hotel.

I think the Doubletree Surfcomber is fantastic. Great beautiful hotel in an excellent location. I think it is more luxury than middle of the road.

We didn't have a special room at all but the furnishings were gorgeous. Big fluffy pillows, down comforters, excellent mattress. Smallish room and bathrooom but that is the way most hotel rooms in South Beach are.

I love the hotel and for the money, it can't be beat.

I'm curious as to the negative comments. The hotel has only been open a couple of years so it is practically brand new.

These are the first three entries on trip advisor for the Surfcomber. My big priorities are cleanliness and safety, your input was very helpful.

1.This hotel really sucked!!! We had to lug our bags inside while the doorman just looked at us.

cm, I went back and read those reviews. I'm guessing that all three were written by the same person because they basically had the same non-complaints.

The dates the reviews were written were two reviews on September 13th and one on September 15th. Two from Greensboro on the same date and the one from Texas two days later. All three made some reference to and hold being placed on a credit card, service, and small rooms.

I have a hotel background so I'll give you a few tips about hotels in South Beach.

Tip#1 Prepare yourself, most hotel rooms are teeny tiny. These hotels were built in the 1940s and 1950s and the size has not changed.

Tip#2 The ocean is so far from the hotels, even the ocean front hotels, forget a view of the ocean.

Tip#3 If you want a large room or a suite with an ocean view, you are going to pay. I'm talking about paying $1,000 a night for a room larger than a postage stamp on an upper floor above the tree line so you can see the ocean.

Tip#4 South Beach is very very expensive. It has an overwhelming number of luxury resorts/hotels and few average priced ones. That means most hotels are very expensive for what you get because the ADR (average daily rate) citywide is very high.

Restaurants are expensive. At a better restaurant, over $100 per person is average.

Nightclubs are expensive. At least $20 cover and for a table, there is usually a one bottle minimum. Bottles mean entire bottle of liquor and they start at around $275 not including tip.

Parking is expensive. Forget about self parking. The locals get the streets, the self lots are $14-$20 per day and valet is $20-45 per day.

Beach services are expensive. Chairs will cost you around $10 per day as will umbrellas. Purchase a couple of beach chairs from the beachwear store on the corner of Collins and Lincoln Road for $20 each.

Resort fees prevail. At the Surfcomber I think they are $7 per day per person but it includes continental breakfast (I think) and beach services.
