Surfing in the USA
Looking for a vacation other than Hawaii where the surfing is good. We surfed in Hawaii last year and it was awesome. Looking for a comparable location
|
Uhh, California perhaps? How are your surfing skills? If minimal, try San Diego and take a lesson. Zuma and Surfrider beach up in Malibu, and a really awesome place to surf is Santa Cruz (bring a wetsuit!).
|
How about The Wedge Surfergirl :)
or if you want the nastiest wave in the mainland USA, Mavericks in Half Moon Bay(Nov-Feb). Will |
Half-Moon Bay can be a maneater!
|
Laguna Beach, CA! We didn't surf there, but saw them everywhere especially at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel (if that's still the name?) A tad bit warmer here than Half Moon Bay - which is just south of San Fran.

southern California

Huntington Beach: Surf City, USA.
Just beat out SantaCruz for the title. Birthplace of surfing. - AR |
I second California!!!
Moonlight beach in Encinitas, USA http://www.ci.encinitas.ca.us/NR/rdo...lightbeach.jpg |
Here's a list of good places/beaches:
Del mar Ventura county line Santa Cruz and trestle Manhattan Pacific Palisades San Onofre and Sunset Redondo Beach LA La Jolla |
Water temps in Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay average in the 50s year round ... be aware that you will definitely need a good wetsuit!

Went to Laguna in August a couple of years ago for a week with teenage son so he could surf- -NO waves. So, we drove to Huntington and Newport in search of waves. Found them a little better in Huntington. You have to be careful about the time of year when asking about the waves.
However, Laguna was beautiful and he ended up doing alot of skimboarding there. |
I don't think there IS a "comparable location" for surfing on the mainland U.S. to Hawaii.

Rincon, PR.

ttt for Michael

ipod robbie's response totally ripped off Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry's Surfin USA spots, but truth to tell, they were pretty spot on.
|
C'mon Suze, how about Mavericks?
