surf lessons

We are in Oahu for 3 days Jan 27-30 then travel to Kauai for a week. I wish to get surf lessons for my 11 year old son. Where would anyone recommend?

If you go to the stand right behind the police station on Waikiki Beach. They rent surf boards, and give lessons.

Need to get there early in the morning for the lessons.

I would recommend Hanalei Bay in Kauia. It is such a lovely beach and community, home to the one armed goddess Bethany Hamilton, and the triple crown winner Andy Irons. I think this is a friendlier environment for anyone to learn to surf. Hope your son has a blast!!!! There are numerous companies, can't comment on one, but you should be able to show up and find something. Aloha.

Nukumoi Surf - they have a shop across the street from Poipu Beach on Kauai. They take you to the "Plantation" - the beach between the Sheraton and Kiahuna Plantation Condos - a beginners paradise. Start with land lessons and then move on into the water. The area is sandy and predictable with waves that won't overpower beginners in the winter months like the North shore. We loved lessons with them - then rented boards from them to surf on our own.

I'm sure there are plenty of kiosks on Waikiki Beach that offer board lessons/rentals.

On Kauai, if you are on the n. shore, contact Hanalei Surf Co. I don't know how big the beach break is in the winter so that may be a concern. If it's not a good beginner spot, the one Mellyz recommended in Poipu sounds fantastic!

aloha!
