SuperBowl Advice
We're seriously thinking about going to the Super Bowl in Houston Texas (flights already booked, working on hotel and game tickets) and would appreciate any advice from anybody that's gone in the past. e.g. which events are worth going to? did you rent a car? how did you get game tickets? would you do it again? THANKS

Pioneer,
If it's not your team playing in the big game IMO it's not worth going. It's extrememly expensive to get tix, over $1000 in most cases for the worst seats and the "events" are contrived. The game itself is just a big corporate smooze fest where everyone is more concerned about being seen than actually watching football. Go to Houston, enjoy the city and the pre-game parties but save the money, skip the game and watch it in a bar! |
I went to the game a few years ago in Tampa and loved it. It definately is an event and that aspect of it that makes it fun. You see celebrity after celebrity and football greats are all around town. You definately realize it isn't the normal Sunday game. My wife and I had a nice chat with Al Davis that had nothing to do with football and Jim Brown enquired about the baby that we were expecting.
Yes, it is a big corporate event, but I don't think detracted from the noise and excitement in the Stadium whenever the Giants or Ravens did something on the field. In terms of events around the game, although there are many, a good portion are private functions. However, the NFL usually sponsors a few things and the nightlife (though we didn't participate) is there for those that want it. In terms of a car, I'm not familiar with Houston so I'd say it probably depends on logistics around town. In Tampa we needed a car, although we didn't bring it to the game. In terms of doing it again, most definately. I should be mention though that I got the tickets from a business contact, but I don't think I'd feel differently had I paid. |
I've never been to the SuperBowl, but I live in Houston and you will definitely need a car. Also, I just checked ebay and there are several people selling tickets at "reasonable" prices. Good luck.

I haven't been to the Super Bowl since the early 1990's when I went 4 times when the Bills were in it. Ticket prices for decent seats will be very high and I agree that unless you're there for a certain team and you really care about the game, it's a not a bad idea to go for a few days before the game, take in the Super Bowl experience and watch the game in a bar. Many of the events were private and most of the fans just partied in the bars. I would do it again, but would only pay the big bucks for a ticket if the Bills were in it.

Big time game and big time fun (IMHO). My wife and went to Tempe/Phoenix in 95 and saw my beloved Cowboys beat the dreaded Steelers. We were very lucky and managed to buy tickets face value from someone outside the game ($250 each and yes they were in the upper section). However, scalpers are everywhere and they will want a lot more. Some people after the game told us they were still asking $500 even after the game had started. I agree with the poster above that it helps to justify the cost if "your team" is playing. I would suggest you try and buy tickets before the game (in a bar, etc) if possible. If you can get a ticket for anywhere near the face value (i.e. face value +$100) I would jump on it if I were you. PS: I would also recommend going to the NFL experience a day or two before the game. Enjoy!
