Ackislander and MikeT -
I respectfully have to disagree -
as a Bostonian who LOVES the Duck Tours
it doesn't bother me as much as ignorant drivers who lay on their horns the second a light turns green !! it's a fun happy sound to me -
Where do you live in town? On the route? maybe you are on the Duck Tour route in an area where they quack frequently - if so, I think you can request, as Newbury St shop owners did a few years back, for the tour not to have participants "quack" in your area - they don't come through my neighborhood, so I only hear them quacking when i am walking in town, and I pass plenty of them who never happen to quack as they pass - they don't do it the entire time - they do it once in awhile to get their participants going -
I have to say as a lifelong Bostonian, I do not passionately or mildly hate the Duck Tours, as said- I love them. - we've used them for corporate pre -cocktail evening affairs and had many relatives with children go on them and have a wonderful time with great tour guides -
Is it highbrow/historical/architectural/museum Boston? no - but it can be a fun way to get an overview and introduction to a city and to see exactly how easy it is to walk from place to place and I think it has added to Boston for many tourists - so what if they quack for fun once in awhile, what makes one person laugh doesn't necessarily make another and most have an enjoyable experience -
the kids (and some adults) love that it goes from road to water)
A few yrs ago they were told to "stop the quacking" when they went down Newbury Street - I thought that was the funniest thing I'd ever heard - and I shop, eat and have hair, etc done on Newbury St regulargly - why? too fancy for them to once in awhile quack ? while residents walk on Newbury St? were tourists complaining? (from the way some of the businesses are going on Newbury, they should maybe welcome the duck tours go down the street) Then I thought about the fact that perhaps it was the residents who didn't like it who live on Newbury, but I was told it was the shop owners who protested.
So I have to say, not trying to start an argument, but it is hard to speak for 'everyone' -
many firms, large and small in town, use them for corporate in house events as well as with clients, it lightens everyone up - it is one of the 'fun' things to do in town - I've even seen 'stiff upper lip, 2 pc suit lawyer' types quack from time to time -
and I've had business people who have done it say to me after 'wow and I haven't been down Newbury since our offic emoved to the financial/waterfront/whatever area and I saw this or that or this new reaturant, etc. - I think it's fine for business and tourists all around-
So,sign me as
"One Bostonian who , when the Duck Tours goes by where I am walking and the participants "quack" - my family and I all "quack" back and everyone smiles and waves - "
