Sunday lunch in Houston

A friend and I will be spending a day in Houston and we're looking for a good place for lunch. We're flying in to Hobby, and attending an event at the Toyota Center, so somewhere convenient to either location would be good. We're not into "fancy" places, but rather somewhere non-chain with good food.

There are so many places between the two, Christie, that it's hard to suggest something specific. What type of food are you looking for? Price range? Chain or non-chain?

Definitely NON chain. (We have enough of those up here in Dallas!)
Preferrably under $20 per person, no alcohol.
Ethnic food is cool. My friend and I love Japanese, and we'd be very open to trying something else.

Cafe Artista is a popular place downtown, a minute away by car from the Toyota Center. It has a great view of the downtown skyline.

Not within walking distance but onoly a short cab ride away is Cafe Montrose at 1609 Westheimer - excellent <<moules frites>>
For good down home funky chic try Barbaby's - also a cab ride, also worth it - original location at 604 Fairview or newer one on at 414 W Gay near Kirby

We're renting a car for the day, so distance isn't too much of a problem. We just don't want to be running all over town and miss our big event at the Toyota Center!

www.citysearch.com is great for researching some of the restaurants given.

When I am downtown, I have to have red beans and rice at Treebeard's. There is one within Christ Church Cathedral Episcopal Church (1117 Texas).

Nearer the Toyota Center, try Massa's Seafood Restaurant, across the street from the Four Seasons.

Down in Midtown, 5-10 minute drive, consider Mai's Restaurant (3403 Milam) for Vietnamese.

If you want to take the Metro, ride down to W. Alabama and go to the Breakfast Klub. Best chicken and waffles in the city.

Oh, I forgot about Sunday. No Treebeards or Breakfast Klub.

Forgot to mention Farrago, 318 Gray (Midtown).

I can highly recommend Mark's on Westheimer. Fabulous food and ambience, and I imagine lunch prices would be in your range.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! So far, Cafe Artiste and Barbaby's look like the most likely candidates. Our trip is Dec. 11, so I'll post a report afterwards.

LDLee--wow--another fan of Mai's! I love that place!

Barnaby's is a perfect choice but be warned the place is always packed. To the gills, particularly the original Fairview location for weekend breakfast/brunch/lunch. Also casual and really good in the same neighorhood is Niko Nikos if you like Greek.

pegelicious-

Don't you love the improvement made to Niko Niko's? I've been going there for about 15 years and the face lift was such a nice change.

This thread is making me hungry. I lived in Houston for 6 years and sorely miss the food.

I have to agree on Mai's--it would be an excellent choice. Very unique!

ChristieP there is a Greek restaurant called Mykonos Island on Richmond. Really authentic. We honeymooned in Greece and always went there for our anniversary. (713.523.4114)

If you like Indian food, Houston has some of the best. And great lunch buffets. The Khyber Grill is really good.(713) 942-9424

Niko Nikos is a thousand times better now. And with the weather nice it's great to have the patio. I was just reading the other thread on galleria area restaurants. Man do I miss all those places!!! (I live in San Antonio now and get to Houston every few weeks or so.)

Thanks so much to everyone who gave advice. We ended up at Niko Niko's and we had a wonderful lunch! The food was very, very good and we both took some pastries home for later, too. (Mykonos Island is closed on Sundays.) We also checked out a bunch of antique stores along Westeheimer.

Our big event at the Toyota Center was the performance of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, which was AWESOME!!

That should read "reporting," obviously. Maybe I need a cup of coffee.
