Sunburst Resort
Was planning a trip to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Thinking about staying at the Sunburst Resort. Anybody know anything about it? Thanks

Whether you'd like it or not depends on your budget and expectations.
The place has a 70's feel to it...like a well maintained old Holiday Inn but southwestern style.
Location is very good as far as access to restaurants, right in the heart of Scottsdale, but it doesn't feel as resort-y as the bigger, more expensive resorts (but then, it's cheaper, too).
If you're attending a meeting and you need a place to sleep comfortably with location a plus, this may suit your needs well.
If you're going for a weekend getaway, and if your budget allows, you can get more mileage elsewhere.

John,

I personally really liked the place. It IS smaller than the other nearby places such as the Phonecian or Princess, but it is cheaper. It has two pools, one heated with one side of it which runs into a "beach" they created. It has nice grounds and the inside rooms overlook the pool and have balconies.I enjoyed it.

I too am planning a trip to Arizona in Oct/Nov and am now considering the Sunburst Resort. I started out thinking about the Phoenician, Hyatt Gainy Ranch and Princess, however since we are only spending 4 nights in the Scottsdale area before moving on, I didn't think we would spend much time at the resort to justify the much higher rates ... But I would like to stay somewhere that has a bit of southwestern ambience and is a little nicer that a "run of the mill" motor lodge.

Ian: Would you have any specific recommendations? We will be going to the raceway one day (in Avondale), and visiting with family in Mesa as well, so I did not want to be too far out from Scottsdale. (Also, we will be traveling throughout the state anyway to Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, and Sedona.)

Sunburst is a great location and although I haven't stayed there, it looks very nice from Scottsdale Road...has been there a long time and I doubt if you can be too far off staying there. It is definitely not in the Phoenician, Princess or Hyatt Gainey Ranch, but it is also not in even close to their price per night. You will be fine there.

We've stayed there several times for conferences, and it's fine. The hotel rooms are fairly basic, but the lobby is nice. We actually prefer staying in the downtown Hilton, or for a more resort feel, the South Point Mountain (or simular name)- the Hilton has a golf course, beautiful grounds, etc. The Phoenician is fantastic, but the price shows it. We've stayed there several times for conferences as well, and it's our favorite but not when it is on our own dollar.
