Sun Protective Clothing for Women
 

Hello.

I just recently saw a program on TV regarding sun protective clothing with a UPF 50+. I thought it would be great for vacationing during the hot summer months.

Has anybody tried them? Are they any good?

I was looking for a ladies jacket, for everyday wear usage. Any suggestions of good online companies?

Also, wanted to buy some outerwear for my mum who had Cancer, thinking this would be a good alternative.

Interested to hear if others have tried this or have any suggestions.

RIT (the company that makes fabric dye) also has a product that is suppose to add a sunscreen to your clothing in the washer. I used this on t-shirts and a long-sleeved shirt last Aug when we went to the Grand Canyon. It seemed to have worked as I didn't get sunburned but I did also use sunscreen, at least initially, on my arms. It is recommended for cotton fabrics. I found it either at WalMart or in my grocery store - don't remember which.
Also, TravelSmith (a mail-order company) also advertises sun repellant clothing.

Living on the beach, I've used just about every sunblock on the market and the very best hands down is Bullfrog.

It is a waterproof gel that lasts for up to eight hours. It is also absorbed quickly with no greasy residue.

I have two long sleeved shirts and some shorts made by Columbia which work very well.

I know people who are involved in marketing a sunblock cloth in the US. The inventor and investors are from Australia, and he says that there is already a big market there in everything from adult clothing to children's swimsuits. He cited very impressive statistics about the protection that it offers. I don't own any clothing myself made from this material, but if it keeps getting hotter we may someday find ourselves buying entire wardrobes of it.

I second the recommendation for www.travelsmith.com and also suggest www.sahalie.com for reputable clothing sites with SPF clothing. Also check at www.sierratradingpost.com for bargains on same.

I just placed orders with Activa, Sahalie and Title IX for active wear. I am very happy with the service and speed of delivery from all three. My DH has ordered frquently with good results from Sierra Designs.
One of the items I ordered is a skort. This is nothing like the horrors of the same name which were around in the dark ages of my youth. Sahalie has a great one (one sale for $44.) which really does go anywhere. Perfect for travel . I also bought one by Patagonia for around $50. which has an SPF#30. I like it very much.

I love Title 9 -- they have such a fun catalog and great clothes.

Bullfrog is the best sun screen I've used, too. I've used it on week long raft trips and I've never burned.

I've always just wore linen long sleeve tops and some low sunscreen underneath. its not uncomfortable and its cheaper and the fabric lets the air in on your skin.

I'm a melanoma survivor so I take my sun protection pretty seriously. I have ordered mostly beachwear from www.sunprecautions.com and have been pleased with the products. The women's beach coverup is particularly good. It's excellent quality and the fabric seems to breathe so you don't overheat. The sunblock clothing really does work but of course I always wear 45 SPF sunscreen underneath as well. The sun umbrellas work well, too.

L.L.Bean has a very limited selection of sun protective clothing as do most outdoor-type stores (REI, Sahalie, EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports)). If you google "sun protective clothing" or "sun block clothing" or even "SPF clothing" you'll get quite a few hits.
