Summer weather in CA (San Fran and North)?
Hi there! My family of six wants to fly into San Fransisco during the summer and drive north to Kings Canyon/Sequoia and Yosemite parks. What will the weather be like? Thanks!

Just want to clarify that we're flexible - either June, July or August. Want to stay a couple of days in San Fran and at a family camp near Sequoia/Kings Canyon.

Summer in SF is generally cool due to the marine layer - the weather pattern is usually fog in the morning that burns off around mid-day and rolls back in in the late afternoon and evening. Some days will be completely fogged in and some will be completely clear.

Inland is a totally different story - the weather can change dramatically as you leave the coast and the marine-affected weather. The central valley is hot and sunny in the summer with reasonably low humidity.

Once you get into the mountains (Yosemite is east of SF, Sequoia and Kings Canyon are southeast), the weather is cooler than the valley, but much warmer than SF.

The San Francisco Bay area has a number of very distinct micro-climates. SF itself, in the summer, is chilly and cloudy. 20 minutes to the south, in Redwood City or thereabouts, it'll be sunny and hot. 30 minutes west of there, in Half Moon Bay, it'll be completely different. The temperature range can easily span 30 degrees within an hour's driving distance -- not kidding. Bring layers, and don't plan on wearing shorts when you're in the city in the summer. But bring them, you'll want them most anywhere else.

>>drive north to Kings Canyon/Sequoia and Yosemite parks.<< Huh? Kings Canyon/Yosemite are definitely not NORTH of San Francisco.

YNP is basically due east of SF and sequoia/Kings Canyon anothe 100 miles south of there.

>>What will the weather be like?<< - Where? The area you are talking about is very large and you could see anything from cold/foggy (in SF) to HOT (in the valley) to warm w/ summer thunder showers (in the mountains).

We went to San Francisco the second week in August last year and were shocked at how cool it is. I would suggest wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a sweatshirt or jacket to layer.
In Yosemite, the weather during the day was very comfortable (mid 70's) but it dropped very quickly as soon as the sun went down. It was especially cold around sunset at Glacier Point. Early the next morning (around 6 AM), it was around 39. The temperature quickly increased.
You will love both Yosemite and San Francisco. My husband and I can't wait to get back!
