summer vacation ideas

Hello: I reside on Long Island, NY. I never considered the mid west for a vacation wk.,but I would be interested in finding out what the region has to offer. I have a choice of the last two weeks in Aug.2014. I would be traveling with my wife and 8 y/o daughter.
I would be happy to find out about parks, resorts, tourist sites, etc.
Thank you,
JRS

Chicago is an obvious choice if you like cities, action, food and fun people. Geneva on the Lake in Ohio is nice. What do you want to do? Being near water will help beat the heat.

Cedar Point is a great family park! Our kids grew up going there and now DH and I go alone. We love it!https://www.cedarpoint.com/ Stay at the Hotel Breakers inside the park. You will have the park in your backyard and Lake Erie in your front yard with 3pools and restaurants in between. YOu will need at least 2 days to fully enjoy the park.

You could then go to Put-In-Bay for the day. You can take ferries from Sandusky over, rent a go-cart for the day and tour the island! There is an Express ferry and the Miller ferry. You can also combine Put-In-Bay with Kelly's Island. The Goodtime makes trips to both islands and both islands have overnight facilities.

The north shore of Lake Superior has a lot to offer. We (my 8 yo, 5 yo and husband) spent our anniversary up there last September. Beautiful with the rolling mountains and fall colors. There are cute towns, hiking, great views, neat restaurants and the grand lake. I have our itinerary if you're interested.

Well gosh almighty, there is so much "beyond the Hudson." What are your interests and of course those of wife and youngster? Having lived in the Middle West and traveled around but now living in Boston area. So canoeing and caves in Missouri, museums in Chicago, Lincoln history in Springfield, IL, swimming and sailing in Michigan, farm museum in Des Moines, covered bridges in Indiana, top notch zoo and botanical gardens in St. Louis...take your pick.

We are doing the North Shore of Minnesota in September. I would LOVE your itinerary and also recs for places to stay and eat. We have our place in Duluth set for 3 days. After that I need to plan. Did you get as far as Thunder Bay?
