You might consider Glenwood Springs. Great old place with one of the largest public swimming pools in the world, naturally heated. Also the final resting place of Doc Holliday the dentist/gunfighter pal of Wyatt Earp. Good fishing and hiking in the area as well.

We had a great time in Durango. You can take the Steam train up to Silverton (spectacular scenery), go white water rafting on the Animas River (very mild whitewater on the lower river, more like a float trip, but the scenery's pretty, you can stop for a swim, good for the ages of your kids), and go horseback riding (lots of outfits advertising, but we went with a small, private outfit at by Lemon Lake that our hotel recommended, had a nice ride up a mountain trail). The Melodrama that's performed at the Strater Hotel is great fun, we laughed ourselves silly. There's a big rodeo in town, but we didn't go to that. It's not far to Mesa Verde where you can visit the cliff dwellings of the ancient Pueblo Indians, really fascinating and highly recommended.

Breckenridge, a former mining town, is even better in the summer than the winter. Lots of hiking in the area, fishing, horseback riding, biking, even boating on nearby Lake Dillon, outdoor concerts, lots of places to eat. Vail has all the same attractions, plus the gondola runs to the top of the mountain, though prices will probably be higher than in Breck. There's a narrow-gauge railroad in Leadville, which is about 45 min. from Breck and Vail.

We are debating between Winter Park and Glenwood Springs. Where did you stay in Winter Park last year?
