Suggstions for a Two night stay in Savannah

I'm in Savannah for a 2 night stay on my way up to Charleston from Orlando. I could use some suggestions to narrow down which hotel/motel to stay at! Is staying in the downtown area the same as the historic district and how far would the airport hotels be from major attractions? Any recommendation you have for a hotel that isn't too pricey (ie. under $100/night) would be idea since I'm travelling alone. I hope it would be located in a 'safe' neighborhood. I'll need someplace safe to keep the car parked.

Thanks!

I was there with my wife a couple of months ago.

We stayed at the Planters Inn Savannah. It's a little above your price range at betweem 130 - 160 per night but breakfast is included. I don't remember if that's the hotel that includes parking. Maybe not.

It's on Reynolds Square right next to the Olde Pink House restaurant. Excellent location and we always felt safe at night.

The areas are -
The Historic district - the place to be if you can be
Midtown - a few miles down Abercorn. Follow Abercorn into the Historic district
Gateway - the hotels next to I95, at the end of Abercorn
Airport - the hotels near the airport

Most hotels will be more than $100/ night in the Historic district. I can think of 3 possible options -
1) the Thunderbird Inn
2) getting a room on Hotwire
3) the hotel ira stayed at recently. check his trip report

The other areas are fine - you'll just have to drive in instead of being able to walk out the door and enjoy Savannah

Best Western Plus. He used the AARP rate. The AAA rate is usually the same.

It is best to stay in the historic area, if you can find a room in your price range.

In Savannah, more than some other cities, it is very worthwhile to take an introductory tour. Without doing so, in a short stay you are not likely to discover that in addition to its antebellum buildings the city has neighborhoods of colonial and Victorian architecture.

One of the best values in Savannah is the Owens-Thomas House. A ticket to the house includes admission to two fine art museums.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will be spending the weekend doing research! I'm sure i'll have s few more questions. I managed to find a Groupon coupon awhile ago for a walking tour by C Savannah. Just need to figure out which tour now to do!

I short listed a few options based on price and location. There is a very small price difference between Planters Inn by Reynolds Square and the Hilton Desoto (more central). I think I may take advantage of the City parking garages through the discounted visitor's rate if I can. I suspect that I will be arriving into Savannah quite late at night. I hope my GPS will help me not to get lost!

I have a few additoinal questions for this forum:
1. Between these two hotels, which would you recommend and why?
2. I'm spending a Mon/Tues night in town. Any recommendations for happy hour specials?
3. Regular walking tour or ghost tour?

1) Almost anything over the Hilton DeSoto. The Planter's Inn is more centrally located thatn those two.

2) drinks on the roof at the Bohemian. I don't know about drink specials but it's a great place to go for drinks.

3) Dirk of Savannah Rambles is the best tour guide ever. I'm not the only one who thinks so. Check his other reviews/recommendations.

Most of the ghost tours are hokey and not based on facts. Dirk has created a night tour that would be a much better option.

Thanks for the suggestions Starrs -- surprised by the very strong opinion on the Desoto hotel lol. Planter's Inn seems like a lovely and highly popular choice.

The walking tour is already paid for so i just need to choose between the options that this tour company provides. If it doesn't work out with them, I'll definitely look into booking with Dirk =)
