NYC Upper East Side Italian Restaurant

Any suggestions for Italian food on the upper east side? Looking for something nice, not pasta or pizza. We've been to Elio's and enjoyed it, but would like to go somewhere we haven't been.

There's a little neighborhood place on the corner of 85th and York called Arturo's. There's not much ambiance but the food is delicious, the service is good and it's reasonably priced. It's a local favorite.

Paola's on 84th (bet. 2nd and 3rd) is quite good with a little more inventive dishes than your regular red-sauce NYC Italian and decent wine list. It get's crowded and busy durind dinner - reservation is recommended.

Gino's on 83rd (1st and 2nd) is also quite good. Typical NYC red-sauce Italian with some good parmigiana-based meat dishes, as well as pasta.

Without a doubt, check out Spigolo, very new, on the Upper East Side, corner of 2nd Ave and 81st Street.

The food is amazing; in fact, NY Times food critic Frank Bruni gave it 2 stars (he's Italian and very tough on Italian restaurants -- only two have received two stars from him in all of New York, and Spigolo is one of them).

Definitely call ahead for reservations. The chef/owners, a very nice couple, live above the restaurant.

Elio is great, but Spigolo is better.

Enjoy!

Just take a walk along 2nd Avenue between 86th & 79th Streets - have your pick.

I like Paola's for different dishes and Arturo's is priced right; for a bit more romance Erminia on East 83rd bet. 2nd/3rd Aves.

Gekko,
Thanks for the Spigolo recommendation. We had a great meal. The pasta dishes were delicious and the desserts were much more interesting than your typical tiramisu. The service was excellent, and I enjoy small neighborhood restaurants. We'll be back there on a future trip.

My pleasure. Spigolo definitely deserves the accolades it has received.

For those who just joined . . . Spigolo is on the northwest corner of 2nd Ave and 81st Street. Don't miss it!

One of my faves for casual Italian eating (inexpensive) is Zucchero at 75th and 2nd Ave.
