Suggestions for U.S.weeklong vacation in August with cool temps???
 

A group of four to six (late 40's to 60) women from Texas will be taking a week long trip at the beginning of August. Our only requirement is the weather. We want to escape the unbearable heat of Texas and find a spot where you need a jacket at night and the temps do not usually head over 80 degrees during the day. We want to get a vacation rental for the week. Our interests are varied so I am sure most anywhere would be perfect for us. Some like shopping, some like outdoor activities such as fishing, some just like hanging out and reading. We love good food and wine so having some food options would be nice as well. Thank you in advance dear fodorites...you always come through.

Just about any place in the Colorado Rockies and especially west of Denver will meet your requirements. Something in Frisco, Breckenridge or Vail. Frisco and Breck have public transit that help individual members move around some.

The Rockies would work, along with Washington's Olympic Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie)

Does it have to be the US? The Canadian Rockies are unbelieveably beautiful and wonderfully cool in August.

Some good shopping in Banff, too.

I've become a lazy traveller--I'd factor into the equation where you can fly non-stop.

California coast is another option - we have cool temps and quite often coastal fog in the summer. Anywhere Big Sur or northward, temps over 80°F is considered a heatwave.

The Monterey Peninsula sounds like it would fit your requirements. Fly into SFO or SJC and drive down. There are options north of SF as well - Mendocino area perhaps.

Although non-stops from Houston would be nice, we really are open to stops/change of planes. Because the airfares to Canada are really high right now, I think we are going to stay in the US. However, I will keep all suggestions for future use. Escaping the Texas heat in August is a yearly task. :)

Go sailing in Maine or coastal Mass.

Seattle or Southern Washington state and the national parks in the area would be good.

And you live in Houston -- the heat (and the humidity and the city stink) ain't just in August, it's in May, June, July and September.

San Francisco?

Maine can be quite hot and humid in August! No so bad right on the coast, but still lots of coastal vacationers complain about motels with no air conditioners and too-warm ocean breezes.

I am actually closer to the LA border and it is the hurricanes we have been running from lately, not just the heat of summer.

I second the vote for the California Coast. Generally, the farther north you go, the cooler the temps. Sea Ranch would be a great choice, especially for the reader in your group (there isn't a lot to do there, but it is very beautiful). Mendocino is a bit of a drive, but has everything. Great food and wine, shopping, fog, and beautiful surroundings. You might want to consider Sausalito or Stinson Beach in Marin County. Both are close to San Francisco so there is a lot to do -- and the weather is nice and cool.

I have taken a poll of the women going. Several have been to the California coast many times so I guess our focus will turn away from that area for now. I know nothing about the places mentioned above in Michigan and have not been north of the Camden area in Maine. Either sound great and of course I would love to hear about more choices. Vail, Aspen area is also a good option, although I am sure most have been there as well. Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming...

I gave a speech in Traverse City, Michigan several years ago, and my wife and I really enjoyed driving up the coast (shore?) of Lake Michigan toward Petoskey and beyond. This is an old-money resort area, nice combination of rural scenery and charming towns, and it takes a lot for me to say that since I live in Nantucket.

Check the temperatures on wunderground for this area and Mackinac. It might be just the right combination.
