Suggestions for travel in August 2007
 

We are researching locations to travel in August 2007. Our budget is somewhat limited and will include air, on-the-ground transportation, accommodations, food, misc. (for 2 people). We'd like to go somewhere that isn't hot and muggy, possibly near the ocean, has relaxation and outdoor recreation opportunities, and fun. We've looked into several places, like Alaska, Iceland, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ireland, and the Carribean. Some of the limitations are cost of airfare (many over $1000/per person) and travel time to get there from Oregon. Anyone have new ideas for travelling in August? Thanks!

Knowing your budget would help.

Some of the best bang for your buck would be to go to the popular ski resorts like Aspen and Vail. Hotels will be a fraction of what they are in peak season and travel time isn't bad from Oregon.

I also think Vancouver is an excellent idea.

Since you are on the west coast, I'd suggest finding a good fare to the Big Island (Kona, HI). It's a laid-back, relaxing place with tons of outdoor activites that don't cost a lot of money (Volcano, Hiking, Snorkeling). There is also a pretty good variation of accomodation depending on your budget.

Budget is around $4,000 to include air, room, car, etc. Appreciate the helpful ideas so far!

How about the Canadian Rockies--Banff, Jasper, and so on?

Whistler or the area around Mt. Baker and Bellingham, WA

Yes, those are all great ideas and I am begining to visualize a trip plan up north to include perhaps several of those places mentioned - maybe after traveling by air, include a scenic train inland to Denali and/or Banff/Canadian Rockies? Will look into it - Any suggestions to exploring these areas? Your ideas have been great! Thanks.

Depend on how much that you want to do, a combination of the Seattle/Vancouver area makes for a great trip.
