Suggestions for Southern/Mid-West Roadtrip?
 

Hello, <BR> <BR>I am looking for suggestions of places to visit that are close to Highway 40 in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and the top part of Texas. <BR> <BR>We are driving from Washington, DC to LA in December, and want to see some interesting things along the way. There is plenty that is common knowledge in Arizona, Tenessee, and New Mexico, but I don't know what to visit in the states named above. <BR> <BR>Right now, we are looking at Mountain View, Arkansas (supposed to be a small town at the foot of the Ozarks--pretty authentic?)? And the Navajo Monument in Oklahoma (can't remember where now). Don't know anything about Texas. <BR> <BR>Are these places worth seeing? Anyone have any better ideas? <BR> <BR>Thanks.

There's an award winning winery in northwest Arkansas that's pretty good. Surprising place to find a winery of that size, but the terrain is very conducive to growing grapes. You'll see the signs on the intersate - something like Wiederker.

Emily: My family and I stayed 3 nites in Mountain View (we stayed inside the state park) and loved every minute of it. There are lots of interesting things to do in that area, and it is quiet different from anywhere else I have been.

Unfortunately, the small part of Texas you'll see on I-40 is by far the ugliest part. IMHO, there is nothing worth stopping for in Amarillo other than the Quarter Horse Museum (and that's only good if you like horses). <BR> <BR>If you could drop down to I-2, which then becomes I-10, there would be a LOT more to see that would be worth your time! Fort Worth is always entertaining, and there's a great French painting exhibit on at the Kimbell Art Museum right now. Abilene has tons of antique malls, and there are also several historic forts nearby. <BR> <BR>Have a good drive, and watch out for those Texas DPS Troopers!

Oops- I meant I-20! And FYI: OK City to Fort Worth via I-35 is only 3 hours.
