Suggestions for nice beach/ resort on Florida West Coast
My family which includes my husband and myself and three 20- somethings are interested in finding a place in July (I know- Hot!) somewhere on the west coast of Fla. - a nice resort on the water with nice pool area. Would like to be within walking distance to good restaurants and bars for some nightlife. Doesn't have to be top of the line but would prefer a really nice charming (rather elegant) resort that would accomodate a group of five. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The good thing about going in July is that it is off season and you can get some great hotel rates, particularly in Southwest Florida. I suggest the Ritz Carlton in Naples. It's a beautiful hotel right on a stretch of white sand beach. Rates are extremely reasonable in the summer - a fraction of what they are in the winter. Not too many bars and restaurants within walking distance but the hotel has a shuttle to downtown Naples. 3rd Street and 5th Avenue are alot of fun - plenty of good restaurants with lively bars.

In my area around St Pete Beach, one of the top beach resorts is the Tradewinds. Don't know about their rates, but it's a nice place with lots of activities. A little farther south down the beach is the Don CeSar resort, more elegant, more intimate, and certainly able to satisfy your every desire. Good Luck.

We had a lovely stay at the Vinoy in St. Petersburg last summer. Got great rates in July. Beautiful, beautiful pool and a great city location within walking distance to the Pier and downtown - but not much of a beach.

Sand Pearl on Clearwater Beach. We live in Palm Harbor but have stayed here numerous times even though it is only 20 minutes away. Beautiful pool, beach, restaurants on site and a spa with wonderful, comfortable rooms. Relaxing resort with lots of great restaurants within walking distance. Bobby's Bistro for nicer dinner and Frenchy's right on the beach for a casual dinner. Wine bar and ice cream shop within walking distance too.

If you are not concerned about a beach but more walking distance to hot spots and restaurants, I strongly recommend the Vinoy in St Pete. It is an elegant old hotel that is one of my favorites. It was nearly torn down before they redeveloped the area. I agree with KatieR; it is on the water but not much beach. It is close driving distance to the Gulf. During the weekends there is alot going on in downtown St Pete, which is walking distance and great for twentysomethings. There are many good restaurants that are quaint and do not scream of chain restaurant, which so many tourist areas in Florida tend to have.

I realize it is a month later but want to say thanks for all your suggestions- I have bookmarked this page for next year- Due to logistics we had to change our plans and we are going to a closer beach. Thanks so much- I will consider all of these again.
