For my husband's 40th I planned a trip to NYC. He didn't have a clue..thought I was going away on a business trip and he was dropping me off at the airport. I had everything arranged..his work agreed, packed his bags, even had friends call and make plans with him for the 5 days we were away so he didn't make plans! I got tickets to a Yankee ball game, theatre tickets, ... we had a blast. He still talks about the big surprise and it was over 10 years ago!!

Cancuck, that was really a nice Birthday surprise. I bet he was really surprised. Nice idea. Lisa, depends what you are looking for beach, mountains, traveling outside of U.S. also what time of year would this be happening? It you want warm I would choose a spot in the Caribbean. Playa Del Carmen, in Mexico is another thought. Florida, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island. Paris for spring time. A very romantic city. Closer to home, La Jolla California. San Diego is a great town, with many activities.

My 40th surprise was New Orleans and it couldn't have been nicer. I thought N.O. was too full of kids but if you get off of that 5-block stretch of Bourbon it's quite "adult" friendly. Nice restaurants that we still talk about too
