Suggestions for hotel near Richmond/Williamsburg

We are driving down the Skyline Drive from Front Royal for 2 nights in the Richmond area before returning to Dulles for our flight. We leave Washington for the skyline drive on a Monday morning (after 10am) and need a place to stay for 2 nights. Our intention is to spend a day in Williamsburg and part of a day in Richmond. We have looked at the Residence Inn by Marriot in Richmond NW, however I am also thinking about staying in near Williamsburg instead. Suggestions please.

Two months ago, we stayed at the Omni Richmond and loved it. We had gotten it on Hotwire for $88 a night. From the Omni we could walk to the Museum of the Confederacy and the Confederate White House, the Virginia Capitol, and Tredegar Ironworks. It was a short drive to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Hollywood Cemetery, where we took an excellent guided tour. The Omni has a wonderful buffet breakfast that was the best breakfast of our trip (not included in the room rate).

We like Williamsburg, and there many adequate hotels around $150 or less. We like the Hampton Inn and Country Inn on bypass road, so its a quick hop on the Colonial Hwy to Jamestown & Yorktown

Thanks for suggestions. Do you think that travelling from Waynesboro to Williamsburg will be a bit of a trek having driven the skyline drive through the day?

Also is skyline drive best done North to South or in reverse. The reason I ask, is that we could always drive straight down to Williamsburg from Washington and do skyline on return to Dulles?
