Suggestions for Gulf Coast Road Trip

My wife and I will be driving from Houston to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, for Christmas. We have some free time and like to roam, so we plan to spend as little time on I-10 as possible, and do not plan to stop in New Orleans. Any suggestions for interesting places to visit or good places to eat in southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle?

I'll always put in a good word for the MS Gulf Coast. Although, I'm sure there will be some yukster to intrude and put the area and me down. Seems no one can post their opinions or suggestions on here with getting a bashing. Oh well, here goes....

Definitely go to Ocean Springs. There is a wonderful pottery place called Shearwater Pottery. Very interesting history behind it too. Stop at the visitor's center to get directions. Downtown O.S. also has incredible shops and restaurants.

Keep heading west on Highway 90 to Biloxi and you will be in casino heaven. The Beau Rivage is a beautiful property. The buffet is sensational, even if you're not into the gambling. We also have great golf courses. History abounds as well.

Stennis Space Center NASA is on I-10 in Hancock County. It is a huge complex with a great visitors center. They do, or did, test-fires for the space shuttle program.

Hope you have a good time.

Dear Lindsey,
Just beyond FT Walton Beach is a lovely area --- home to Seaside (featured in the Jim Carey movie "Truman") and near there is Hwy 30-A which meanders along the Gulf. No buildings over 4 stories allowed. Many great restaurants --- Cafe 30-A, Cafe Tango (tiny, only about 10 tables, wonderful food and service) and everyone's favorite, the Red Bar in Grayton Beach. I live here and every time I return from a trip I think... gee, why did I leave paradise? The Inn at Gulf Place has nightly stays, unusual for this area of mainly weekly stays and has fun new shops. Have a great trip!

It's Ft. Conde in Mobile. It dates back to the Spanish.
