Suggestions for an Isolated Week Please

Two adults and one dog

looking to spend a week out in the middle of BEAUTIFUL "nowhere"

Ideally: on a lake or with stunning (I know that's subjective) views; isolation is a plus

General location: upper or northeast Minnesota; northern Wisconsin or Michigan

Accommodations don't have to be luxurious but we want something a couple cuts above a tent and some cots (we've done that)

I am not including northern New England because we'll be THERE for a week later this year; also not including Canada only because of the possible hassle getting the doggie back and forth across the border,

ANY suggestions or pointers in the generally "right" direction would be appreciated

How about the lodge on Isle Royale in Lake Superior...only get there by boat or plane. It's a national park and should meet your requirements
Other, less specific thoughts, the Door Peninsula in WI or Keweenaw Peninsula in MI?

Oh Dukey1, when I first saw the title of your post, I was going to recommend the cloistered nunnery a few blocks from my house in Central Ohio complete with Carmelite nuns. They live in a gorgeous old mansion and people who have been there say the inside is beautiful too. When my children were small and misbehaving, I used to have pipe dreams about converting to Catholicism and showing up ready, willing, and able to join (sort of like running away to the circus?). But after reading your post, it sounds like you want a few more amenities?

try Copper Harbor on the keewenaw in the UP. very small town, couple of restaurants and shops. We didn't want to leave. Think the motel was Belle Vista, small clean and outside seating to enjoy the views of the Great Lake. "SUPERIOR" place.

Have you ever considered Door County Wisconsin? Looks nice.

Thanks for these replies. Unfortunately, Isle Royale does not allow pets anywhere on the island so that is out. Copper Harbor I am very interested in and there is at least one motel with lake views which does allow pets so that is tempting.

We loved the small, arty harbor town of Saugatuck, MI I don't know how dog friendly the accomodations are as when we were there we were in the harbor anchored on our sailboat. But we loved that little town and the people. http://www.saugatuck.com/index.asp

You've probably been to Mackinac Island but it is dog friendly and lovely! http://www.mackinacisland.org/pets.html

Actually, we have not yet been to Mackinac and are considering a stop-off there as well.

Again, I appreciate all these suggestions as they are helpful
