Suggestions for a 13-year-old in San Francisco and area

What should be the top attractions for a 13-year-old girl (traveling with her grandparents) to see in San Francisco for a week in April?

The top 3 would probably be:
1) Fisherman's Wharf
2) Chinatown
3) Moscone Center "Zeum" & Metreon complex if she's a techie or Union Square if she's more into shopping for clothes.

If I were a kid I would much rather see the Exploratorium than Fisherman's wharf.

It's a hands-on science muesum out near the Golden Gate bridge. Very cool.

2nd the nomination for Metreon, interesting complex with a lot of neat stuff including an IMAX theater, close to Market street and Union square.

Definitely Alcatraz! Kids and adults love it. Went this past summer with nieces and nephews (ages 5-11) and it was a highlight of the trip.

All of the above are wonderful suggestions and recommendations, but if you want to be heroes for a lifetime, find time to stop at Nordstrom's at the San Francisco Center and take her to the cosmetics counters: MAC, Philosophy, the works! Let her buy a few things! Awesome clothes and earrings here as well. In the alternative, take her to Bare Escentuals at Fisherman's Wharf or Embarcadero Center. Magnificent bath/beauty products. Good prices too. The Skydeck at Embarcadero Center is rather thrilling as well. And, you'll both (the grandfolks) enjoy the magnificent photographs of the rock/folk stars from the 60's/70's. Awesome. She'll love you for it (the beauty products). I'd also recommend a visit to Coit Tower for the views and the murals; and a walk down (all the way down) the steps to Levi Plaza. You'll enjoy this as well. And, not to be missed would be a ride on the Cable Cars, especially the Powell/Hyde line from one end to the other (worth the wait), best after dark. The Wok Wiz walking tour (they have a website) of Chinatown is fabulous. Much better than walking around on your own. The tour with the dim sum after is well worth the price. As for the boat tours, unless you really want to visit the inside of a prison, just take the ferry over and back to Tiburon. Goes right past Alcatraz for great views, with spendid panoramas of the islands, bridges and skyline over and back.

My 13 y/o daughter loves Pier 39, walking through Chinatown and picking out pearls, going shopping on Union Square; lunch buffet at Gaylords in Embarcadero or Ghiradelli Square... and of course, a hot fudge sundae at Ghiradelli! Dont forget FAO Schwartz near Union Square. We often cruise all the way down through the Italian District and have a cannoli in the evening or walk to the galleries along the wharf...Point Street, I think it is.

Believe the Skydeck at the Embarcadero Center has just closed or is in the process of closing. How about Union Street with a stop at Bepple's Pies for an a la mode, Alcatraz (you want to rent the headsets for sure), the Cable Car Museum, Ghiardelli and in April the street merchants should be out between Ghiardelli and the Cannery selling inexpensive jewelry (the kind that has great teen appeal, and all merchants are licensed by the city) and t-shirts. Also, just next door to Ghiardelli is a museum/jewelry store with reproductions of Victorian earrings etc. Could hardly get our nieces out of there last year. There is a little shop in Chinatown where they still assemble fortune cookies, and be sure to tell her the legend of Lily Hitchcock Coit--what a spunky lady she was!! On Saturday mornings, there is the the wonderful Farmers Market at the Embarcadero where you can make a whole meal grazing from the vendors. In Chinatown, we would recommend the Great Eastern as a basic, introductory restaurant to Chinatown. You will find that SF is for all ages and you just need to walk around and open your eyes to find something for everyone. Enjoy.
