Suggestion of staying in between Las Vegas and Yosemite national park

Hello, me and my friend are planning to drive from Vegas to Yosemite around late August to the beginning to September. We were just thinking 7 hours drive to Yosemite is too long for us, so we are planning to find a place that we could stay in between. Is there any suggestion place that we could stay between Las Vegas and Yosemite? I heard about Death Valley but not sure about the weather.
Any suggestion will be appreciate.
By the way we have 8 people in total!

Bishop, Mammoth, June Lake, Lee Vining. All along Hwy. 395. Along the Eastern Sierra.

Thanks for the suggestion, we were thinking death valley at the first stage because we want to see the view there. However it's really hard for us to find an accommodation for 8 people. Is there any recommendation that could work for us which in these few places?

Death Valley will be too hot to stay in end of August, think over 100F. Michelle gave you good ideas.

In Lee Vining, Murphy's Motel or Lake View Lodge -- are larger motels so more likely to have room for all of you. Lake View even has some cottages that might fit all of you in one unit.
