I would appreciate some help in finding inexpensive but nice accomodation for next Monday near the airport or the Fishermans Wharf area. I just have the one day for doing a little sight seeing. Any help would be great!!

The airport is not really convenient to any of the city sights so I wouldn't recommend staying there if you only have one day to spend. You can catch a "Super Shuttle" to the downtown hotels and reserve a ride back with them. Try this URL for some B&B listings, some are reasonably priced: http://www.smarttraveler.com/USA/CA/SF/sfohotel.htm. Anything near Union Sq. or Nob Hill is easily accessible by foot, cab or mass transit to all the sites. Have fun.

We went to San Francisco and Stayed at the Holiday Inn Union Sq. It was very nice (not cheap) and right on the cable car route. There's also a Holiday Inn at Fisherman's Wharf. That's really convenient. If you'd like to see Alcatraz Island, call now for tickets. They're usually sold out 4 - 5 days ahead -- a great tour.

A great small European-style hotel near Fisherman's Wharf is the San Remo. It's in the Italian District, within easy walking distance of Fisherman's, China Town, Ghiadella Square, etc. It's rooms are small and have shared bath but everything is very clean and rooms are even furnished with antiques. Try the Maxwell Hotel on Geary near Union Sq. This area is great for shops, hotels, restaurants, & access to cable cars.

I stayed last month in the Ramada Limited on 7th street, South of Market. I only paid $79 a night. It's pretty close, but not terribly close, to the 'action'. But you could drive, take a taxi or Muni to the sites you want. The room wasn't noteworthy, but for the price it was OK.

The Hotel Triton is a stylish hotel in Union Square, which is very centrally located, and is inexpensive, especially for its stylish-ness!

My husband & I were in San Fran last June & stayed at the Pan Pacific Hotel. It was very nice, but was a typical chain hotel. While sightseeing, we walked into a cafe that was connected to Monaco Hotel (or Hotel Monaco - I forget!) We peeked in the lobby & kicked ourselves for not knowing about this place! It was lavishly decorated (Art Deco) & the rooms pictured on the pamphlet were beautiful. I'm staying there next time I go - it has all of the amenities of a larger hotel, yet the ambiance of a trendy, smaller hotel. If anyone does stay here, please let me know what you think.

Responding to Wil: We're just back from S.F. The area you ask about, I thought was very noisy and short on charm. There are all kinds of hotels along that thoroughfare, so I would guess it's reasonably safe at nite. We stayed at Union Square at the Chancellor....$121/nite. Not a real cheap price, but a real value, we thought. It's an older, smaller hotel...and just a delight. Also quite convenient to a lot of stuff and right on the street car line. Good luck!

Danielle: My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Monaco last November and loved it! Location is unbeatable for either business or sight-seeing. We ate only once in their restaurant, the Grand Cafe - breakfast, and it was mediocre for the price, but oh, the bar! It has tiny cafe-style tables and some booths around the perimeter, and serves pizza and appetizer-type food with, of course, drinks. We began each evening's outing right there and people-watched the S.F. business/trendy types meet and greet. A very happening place and beautifully decorated. We booked through San Francisco Reservations (800)677-1500 which offers discounts on all properties. Just give them your price range. They're very helpful, and seem to know a lot about the hotels.

the metro hotel is a great cheap little hotel that's close to haight ashbury. if you want to avoid fisherman's wharf and the other plastic attractions it's great. about 10 minutes to union square by the n-judah underground.

I would second the vote for the Hotel Triton on Grant Avenue. An Art-Deco hotel for the tragically hip. It is located at the gate to Chinatown and in an area called the French Quarter (Corner). We live in the Bay area and everytime we go to S.F. for the weekend we stay at the Triton. It's way too cool.

I have read your post about the Hotel Monaco. The description in Fodor's got my interest. Sometimes it is difficult to make a choice from the description especially when you plan on staying a number of days. Can you provide more impressions about the rooms / service? Also if not this hotel have you had the opportunity to check out the Chancellor or have heard about it?Thanks!

I stayed at the Handlery Union Square for a week in mid-May. The hotel was reasonable for San Fran ($115/nite) and it was lovely. The staff (especially the concierge Alan) was great. I would highly recommend it. It's not a chain hotel, has charm, and is 1/2 block off Union Square on Geary St.
