Subway Line from GCT to Upper East NYC

I usually take cabs while in NYC, but for this jaunt I can just hop on the subway so I want to double-check with the resident experts (McLaurie are you out there?) to see if I have read the schedule correctly. I will be arriving at Grand Central around 4:00 pm on a Saturday and wish to take the subway from there to the UES (anywhere around 85th is fine). Can I take the 4 or 6 line to Lexington & 86th?

Wanted to be clear about which line to take because the way I operate odds are that I will get on an express or limited or some other odd train that only stops in that area on the 2nd Tuesday of the 3rd week in August when the moon is full and the stars are aligned just so (you get the drift)

Thanks!

The 4,5,6 trains all stop at 86th St and Lexington Ave (it's an express stop). There are no service advisories that will affect those trains stopping at 86th Street so you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query, I really appreciate it (and thanks to you I won't be on a train bound for nowhere!)

Try this website:

www.hopstop.com

It provides detailed instructions to move around NY using public transportation.

Besides being sure to go uptown, be careful not to mistake the S (42nd St cross town shuttle) for the 5. They're clearly signed and through different passageways, but if you're directionally challenged it might be an issue.

If you have luggage you may want to consider the #6, local which stops on the upper platform, so only one staircase up to the street. The local doesn't take but maybe 3-minutes longer than the express.

With the oven-like condition in subway turnstiles, I'd opt for an air-conditioned cab.
