Subway from LGA

Hi,
Is the subway the best way to get to midtown from LGA? And can I grab it right from the airport - is it easy to find?
Thanks!

There is no subway at LGA. Here's a recent discussion of the topic and some of the options.

There is no subway or public bus directly from LGA to Manhattan. You have to do a combo of both, hauling luggageup and downstairs and it will take an hour and a half at best.

For one person yo can get an airport bus to Grand Central or - I think Port Authority for about $15 - then you have to take a subway or cab - depending on where your hotel is.

For 2 or more a cab (about $35-$40 with tip/toll) will cost the same.

Actually nytraveler there IS a public bus from LGA to Manhattan--the M60,but it only goes as far as
106th and Broadway, not to midtown.

bsingerline, if you read the other Fodor's post I linked to, you'll see what people suggest and why.

Public transportation from LGA to most of Manhattan is cheap but very slow and certainly not recommended if you have anything more than a single small bag.
Do any of the other options given seem reasonable to you?

Thanks very much for the info and suggestions. I think I'll try either the shuttle bus or the cab option.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

Yes- but unless they've moved it - 106th St isn't anywhere near midtown.

They would still have to do another bus or subway, deal with stairs - and take forever to do it.

The incredibly stubborn husband of a friend of mine took the subway/bus from the upper west side to LGA and it took him almost 2 hours. He ended up missing his flight (couldn't get through security in time) - than got stuck in FL - since his FIL wouldn't do another 3 hour RT to the airport to pick him up the next day. So he had to rent a car - much more than taking a cab to the airport in NYC would have been.

I know, and I know YOU know that, but I was just clarifying your original statement:

(you probably left out a word or two that you meant to include)

Public transportation to/from NYC area airports is so far behind other cities. We need all the help we can get/give in clarifying the situation to visitors!

You're correct -

I should have said there is no direct subway to public bus to "midtown Manhattan".

The only single bus goes to uptown only. Everything to "midtown" is bus plus subway or 2 buses.

I use Super Shuttle from LGA to Times Square. Best part is that you can book online and pay with a credit card. They even figure in the tip (which is usually less than I would have tipped). That way you're not digging around for your money when your dropped off at your destination. I've never had a problem yet and they were always prompt on my pick up as well.
Enjoy your trip.

Super Shuttle in NYC is NOT reliable. They often pick people up and then drive around for an our picking up other passengers before heading for the airport. Do the same at teh airport - picking up people in different places and then dropping at different places in Manhattan before getting to your hotel.

For 1 person the shuttle too Grand Central Or PA makes sense - since they don;t waste an hour or more driving you around in traffic from one hotel to another. For 2 or more a taxi will be just as cheap.
