Subway from Brooklyn to Manhatten

We are staying In Carrol Gardens and will be going into Manhattan. I know we will be taking the F Train but am having a hard time reading the subway map online(too small). If we want to end up on the 4 or 6 train going up town should we get on those lines in Brooklyn(which stop is that) or take the F train into Manhattan (which stop is that..this is the stop I can't seem to read).
Thanks for your kind time.

We need to know your starting address in Carroll Gardens and where "uptown" you want to end up to know how to direct you. But generally, from the Carroll Street stop you can just take the F train to 53rd and Lexington (the Lexington Avenue stop) and change to the 6 train going in the uptown or downtown direction.

If you are looking at the MTA map on line, if you just click on the map at the stop you want, it open a link to the subway line list of station stops. The list will tell you what trains are available to transfer to at each station.

Or, you can just use www.hopstop.com - and be sure to use the pull down menu to designate which borough (Brooklyn) you are starting out in.

Your choice may also depend on where you want to end up once in the city. Yes, even though it's all New York, those of us who grew up in the outter boroughs call Manhattan "the city."

Anyway, if heading up the East Side the 4 train is your best best. (BTW, the 6 ends at Canal Street) If heading up the West Side, take the F train.

The F train does not stop at 53rd and Lexington-you have to switch to the V train at some point as only the E and V trains stop there. This changed a few years ago.

Oh whoops - you're right Skiergirl - OP has a few options - that's why hopstop is a valuable tool. Sometimes just walking a couple of blocks might be the best option, rather than changing trains.
Ryan - the last stop on the 6 is Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall - 1 stop south of Canal St.

Take the F train to Grand Central/42nd St and you can catch either the 4 or the 6. The 4 is an express train which means it stops at the major streets and the 6 is a local train which means that it stops about every 10 blocks.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking Canal when I meant City Hall. Can you tell I don't ride that subway anymore. Shout out to the E train!!!

travelbuff, the F train stops at 42nd and 6th Avenue - not Grand Central. To reach Grand Central from the F train one would have to transfer to the 7 train at 42nd Street and then transfer to the 4, 5 or 6.

Thanks for that I thought the F stopped at GC, but your're right it's the 7 train.
