Stupid question Big Island?
 

Is the ocean floor in Waikiki beach covered with soft sand or rocks? We will be at the Hilton. If the answer is rocks, which beach has soft sand?

Waikiki is on Oahu, not the Big Island!

Waikiki is a sandy beach, although there are rocks out in the water and remains of coral as well. Hilton keeps their beach nice for walking and sunbathing.

Waikiki Beach is in Honolulu, Oahu. The name of the big island is Hawaii.

Are you speaking of the Hilton Hawaiian Village (in Waikiki, Oahu) or Hilton Waikoloa (on Hawaii, the Big Island)? I saw you other posts which is which I questioned.

Hm, it's easy to mix up Waikoloa with Waikiki. Make sure your hotel location matches up with your flight destination. (HNL = Honolulu on Oahu). (KOA= Kona Airport on Hawaii)

If you do mean the Hilton Waikoloa, there is no beach there. It is all rocky shoreline, which is why the pools and man made lagoons are so well used.

Furthermore, the wikiwiki shuttle @HNL does not go to Waikiki :o)

I'm curious too... Are you going to the Big Island or Oahu (where Waikiki is located)?

Sorry for the confusion. I am going to the Big Island, Hawaii I was thinking about staying in the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The two most important features are a nice hotel and a great beach with soft sand (no rocks). What do you think?

At the Hilton Waikoloa, there is no sand beach only a rocky one. There is a very nice man made lagoon on the property with a sandy "beach". And the real beach is a 10 minute walk from the Hilton. There is another property at the nice beach, and someone can tell us the name of it now (was a Marriott until recently?).

Assuming you have a car, Hapuna Beach is about 15 minute drive north of the Hilton, and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii, well worth a couple of visits. The pools and lagoon at the Hilton are great fun, but for a real Hawaiian beach, you'll have to go elsewhere.

The beach that is a 10 minute walk is still a Marriott and recently underwent renovation. The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is on a gorgeous beach.

We stayed at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in Oct 2006 and LOVED IT! The beach was great - wide, long, soft and the water had great waves for playing. No snorkeling there though.

The hotel was terrific too and had few if any children, if that matters to you.

I did not like the Hilton Waikoloa. Sort of a low-end Disneyland with way too much going on for me. Too many kids, too much over the top stuff. If you feel you need to have stuff for kids, it would be ok, but the Hapuna Prince is a much more tranquil experience on a terrifc beach.

There's plenty of snorkeling at Hapuna, it's just in deeper water and a little rougher than other places.

The water was rougher for sure and that meant it was cloudy and that you got pulled around a lot while trying to snorkel. For snorkeling, there are lots of other places on BI. For the one of the best hotel beaches [or any beach] I love Hapuna Beach.

OK, I am down to two hotels. Which one? The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel or the Fairmont Orchid. I checked on mapquest and they are 7 miles apart. Do they share the same beach. Is the Fairmonts beach as nice as the Hapuna Beach Prince beach
