I too am going to NYC and is wondering what to wear. I work for a major software company in Silicon Vally California where shorts and sandles to work everyday is the norm. We plan to do a lot of sight seeing (walking many NY blocks) and it seems that wearing shorts would be the most comfortable. My wardrobe is mostly casual, but nice casual (Ann Taylor etc.) Also, can someone explain the black and more black?

You can't go wrong if you wear black, but obviously you don't have to. Pastels and other colors go in and out of style, but black while not as ridiculously popular as some people would think (hey, not all of us dress like Sex and the City characters either. Who runs down the street in Manolo Blahniks?) is always OK. I think tourists would be most comfortable and not stand out in some variation of chinos or decent jeans and a dark shirt almost all year. If you're going out at night, jazz it up if you lie and the place you're going deserves it.
