Street Parking around Harvard Sq (Boston)?
 

Hi fellow Bostonians-

Anyone has first hand information/experience regarding street parking near Harvard Sq? DH & I are going to the Fogg Art Museum (32 Quincy) this Saturday, most likely we'll get there between 9-10am. I'm hoping I can find parking nearby. We'll need to find a metered spot that is valid for 2 hours; and I know a lot of meters are only good for 1 hour.

Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated!

FYI, the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger Museums will be closed at the end of this month for new bldg & major renovation. The new building won't reopen until 2013. They will put parts of the collection in rotation for view at Sackler, but we figured we should go see it all before the closure.

I have a class at 0930 Saturdays in Harvard square and have been able to find meters on Brattle St. near the Appian Way intersection at that time. Two hour limit there may not give you alot of time since you'll have to move your car after that and try and find another space nearby which won't be easy later in the morning.

I'm sure I won't be the only one to say the subway would be easier.
There are also parking garages in the area where you can park for longer (and more money).

Don't know where you're driving from, but agree with taking the T. We park at Alewife.

Metered spots are a real challenge to find on a Saturday unless you allow lots of time, drive all around and get lucky with someone leaving. Garages are pricey.

Thanks. I think 2 hours will be enough for us. The Fogg and Busch-Reisinger Museums aren't that big, plus we've been there about 1.5 years ago. We just want to go back there one more time before the closure.

I will try your suggestion, Krista. I have looked into public transportation, but it's not that convenient for us as we live in Waltham; and we're going to visit my SIL afterwards who live in East Cambridge. I'm hoping that since it's still relatively early in the morning (~9:30am) we will get lucky and find a spot.

P.S. Given the Harvard Commencement has already taken place, is it correct to assume there aren't any more graduation festivities in the area?

MIT's commencement is today. Probably many families of Harvard and MIT grads will linger in the Cambridge area for the weekend.

I, too, would assume there be lots of &quot;extra&quot; people in Cambridge this weekend, moving their kids out of their dorms.

I think from much experience that you will not have trouble finding street parking IF you arrive by 10. Harvard Square does not wake up early on weekends ever, and the weekend after graduation is one of the nicest times of the year.

Park carefully - if a street says resident sticker required and if it includes weekends, they mean it and you will at least get a ticket.

Try going east of Oxford and north of Kirkland -- those are residential streets but you might get lucky and it's an easy walk.

I just want to report back - finding a parking spot around Harvard Sq ~9:30am is not difficult at all!

Krista- your suggestion was right on! Brattle St has 1-hr metered spots closer to the sq, but the section after Appian way have 2-hr spots and we parked there. I also noted the spots on Church St are also 2-hr parking.

The Fogg and Busch-Reisinger have some great paintings there, from Italian Renaissance to Impressionist to German Expressionism. Do go visit this month if you've never been, or else you'll have to wait until 2013 when the new bldg is finished!
