Stratosphere in Las Vegas
I was possibly planning on staying at the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas in July (they seem to be runnning weekend specials) and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this hotel. Any advice would be appreciated!

The location is poor, much too far from the center/south area of the strip where the new grandiose hotels are. I have not stayed in this hotel. Check out other moderately priced hotels better located including NYNY, MGM, Treasure Island, etc. And dont even investigate Circus Circus which is up near Stratosphere.

I'm with Jim Strat WAY to far from the action.. bad part of town

Stratosphere HAS to run deep discount specials in order to fill rooms.
It's in an unsafe part of the strip (at night), it's a dumpy place, and you can find something much better for a few dollars more in most cases.

I spent 5 days there once and enjoyed it. The room (a suite) was very nice, the restaurant at the top was very good, and the gaming area was pretty fun. I would go again. Yes, it is rather set off by itself on the strip but I never felt unsafe. I walked to the main area a couple of times (about a mile) but it was too much with the heat, so just take one of the waiting cabs in front of the hotel. I think people give the Statosphere a bad rap, even though they have never set foot in the place, just because it isn't huddled-up against the other places. Big deal, I say, especially if the price is right.

I've "set foot in the place" many times. Always with groups of friends travelling in LV together, and always guys.
The original poster is a female (it would appear) and for that reason I think safety is an issue. And because you felt safe, Derrick, I would not assume that a female, possibly travelling alone, would feel the same.
Stratosphere does indeed have a good restaurant at the top. And if it were in the middle of the strip I'd rate it about the same as a place like Excaliber or Barbary Coast.

Sue: I'm afraid I have to agree with the others. While the hotel itself is perfectly fine as far as rooms, dining, etc., the location really is a major problem. It's a very long walk from anything else and, as others have said, it's not in a very good part of town.

I bet you can find another hotel which is in a much better location at a price that's not much different. The Monte Carlo is a beautiful hotel with a location that can't be beat, and it frequently has very good deals. Other nice hotels in good locations that frequently run good specials are Treasure Island, New York New York, Luxor, and Harrah's. If you're getting high prices from the hotels themselves, you might try Expedia, which frequently has good deals.

Another option would be the Casino Royale, which is a small, no-frills hotel with a fantastic location pretty much across the street from the Mirage. The rooms are nothing special, but are clean and well-kept -- think Hampton Inn. (At least that's how they were when I last stayed there, about 2 years ago). The casino is small but is nice, with lots of the newest games. The CR also has some of the friendliest employees in Vegas, and the comps are very good (free food and free or v. cheap accomodations with very little play).

You won't get the atmosphere of someplace like Monte Carlo or New York New York, but you might want to check on their rates. If given a choice between Casino Royale and Stratosphere at the same price -- or even if the CR were $20 or $30 more -- I would choose Casino Royale in a heartbeat.

(Oh yeah, and I would agree with the person who said not to consider Circus Circus).

Why wouldn't I assume Sue would feel just as safe as I did? I suggested she take a taxi if going somewhere, so I guess you are speculating that she would be the victim of a crime somewhere within the hotel or walking to the curbside cab at the well-lighted, staffed, covered entrance. Have you witnessed rampant crime at the Stratosphere? I didn't think so.

I think you have missed the point Derrick. My guess... you have ties to the Strat. But I think the point we are trying to make is, with ALL the other choices, why go there? You even say its set away from the strip. And sure you might of felt "safe"..but just ask any local what parts of Vegas to avoid if possible. I'll give you 10 to 1 odds, that part of the strip is in the top 5

Too far away from the action and kind of dumpy. You can do better.
|
check on the excalibur for the ultimate in convenience, not to mention cheese!
|
At the risk of being repetitious, Stratosphere is kind of far from where you want to be in Vegas. If you account for all taxi fares several times a day, you could just pick a slightly more expensive hotel in the center of the action. Enjoy whatever you decide.

How do you know the original poster isn't a boy named Sue?

Sue--
My wife and I stayed there last year because of the great weekday rates and were very happy with the place. We were even upgraded to a junior suite. Don't let the location be the determining factor. We had a rental car and free parking or valet parking is available at most,if not all,of the major casinos on the strip. The restaurant at the top of the tower is nice, but very expensive. The American Superstars show is quite reasonable and actually very good. There is also a shuttle bus that stops right in front of the hotel that will take you all the way down the strip.
