Strange but Serious Question

This may seem like a strange question to some but I assure you that I am seriously looking for your suggestions. I am looking for a special place to spend a romantic vacation with my husband next summer(1-2 weeks in either May, June, or July) where we will hopefully conceive our first child. I want a place that we will always remember. If you could pick anyplace to go for a romantic vacation, where would it be? I have a few ideas but am really hoping for some personal experience stories to help me make a decision. Looking for both place and accomodation advice. Thank you.

What part of the country?

Mare Aug 17th, 1999 08:03 PM

Black Hills of South Dakota! If you want more info contact SD Tourism!

I say drive the California coast, and maybe spend a few days at Lake Tahoe. It's beautiful and I have spent many a romantic weekend in Tahoe, San Diego, Half Moon Bay, Manhattan Beach and Laguna Beach. May and June would be really nice - not yet crowded, not yet too hot.

Nice weather, beautiful scenery, relaxing beaches... it won't take much to put you in the mood.

Good luck.
You would get more specific advice if you described what YOU consider romantic. Many people think sunbathing on a white sandy beach is lovely; my wife and I cannot think of anything we would enjoy LESS. Do you like beaches? Mountains? A quiet cabin by the lake in woods? There are many places *I* consider romantic based on *MY* preferences, but I think you're looking for something for *YOU*.

Michelle Aug 18th, 1999 08:48 AM

To eeee:
As to what part of the country, I am open to all suggestions.

To Paul:
I didn't describe my ideas of romantic partly because I am really looking for ideas of places I may not have thought of. Basically, anything that does not involve sleeping in a tent could have romantic possibilities.

Thanks for responding.

I hope with you that conception will take place on order, but it took 4 years for us. Glad you are going to have romantic fun in the meantime!

At the risk of sounding a little new-age-y, let me describe a time and place I experienced alone, but which would have been perfect to start a new life:

In June or July, at the full moon, on the Maine coast -- which is far enough east that the sun is still setting as the moon rises. If you are on a promontory or island, you will be able to see both sun and moon over the water -- the colors and light are incredible. Add to that the sound of the waves and the sea gulls and the wind. I was near Pemaquid Lighthouse, and when the lighthouse lit up (after sundown, with moon hanging above), it was all magic.

What could be more perfect than sun, moon, stars, earth, water, wind, and love?

Spent one night (wish it could have been a week!) at the Surf & Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach, CA. It's a AAA 4star hotel, and each room has a balcony overlooking the ocean. We slept with the sliding glass doors open to the sound of the waves crashing into the beach - talk about romantic. It was actually kind of hard to sleep not being used to that sound in bed, but it was still wonderful. The rooms are just beautiful, light colors, very carribean. They have a nice bar and restaurant that are inside/outside overlooking the beach. Good Luck.

Caneel Bay on the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. Very private. Only allow so many at the resort. Private cottage with hammock. Open all your shutters and let the ocean breeze blow through. Walk right from your door to the ocean and beach. Good distance between each cottage so you feel secluded. Expensive but worth every penny and you will remember it a lifetime.
Michelle:

What did you decide?

Chuck Aug 30th, 1999 07:27 AM

Well, for us (36 years) the most romantic spot on earth is Cairns, Queensland, Australia. If that is a bit far than I would agree with a previous poster on St. Johns. St.Thomas is great also. Let us know what you decide.
Chuck

John Aug 30th, 1999 11:21 AM

Santorini, Greece.
The views of the caldera, warm nights, white washed buildings. If we hadn't been there before we got married we probably would have gone there on our honeymoon. Just avoid the month of August, when it is overrun by tourists.

kam Aug 30th, 1999 01:01 PM

I would choose Sedona, Santa Fe, Santa Catalina, the Mendochino coast, but most of all I would choose the hotel or resort first. If that's not romantic, it ruins everything. We loved the Inn on Oak Creek in Sedona but we weren't seeking the same outcome---way to long ago for conception! From there you can take day trips to the Grand Canyon and be back to romantic Sedona at night. There's a lot of folklore and history and the red rocks are beautiful. Just enough to do and meet your goal also! Good luck and let us know what you decide. P.S. Sedona/ Santa Fe in May or June, no later.

Hi Leta ([email protected]) : U mentioned St. John in the Virgin Islands. Sounds lovely enuf for my husband and i to like it. Where can get info on that place - any web site or from AAA ? And can u give me details of where u stayed, contact no.s, etc, if it's not too much trouble.

I was also wondering if this is the U.S Virgin islands or the british ones ?

Thank you to all who have responded. For those who have asked about our decision, unfortunately, none has been made yet. Even though the suggestions received so far sound appealing (especially like the Maine coast idea Lottie), I guess I'm still waiting to hear of the place that sounds perfect. So if anyone else has recommendations, especially on lodging choices (since I do agree that can make or break a locale), please post. Thanks again to everyone.

Ooops!!! Forgot about this posting. So you want ideas for romantic sites? Our personal favorites:

Anywhere in Hawaii.
The major lodges in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yosemite, Sequoia, or Denali.
Estes Park, next to Rocky Mountain NP.
Mackinac Island (May too early).
Cabin in north Minnesota (ditto).
Along coast of Maine (ditto).
On Cape Cod (NOT in July).

Hi Michelle, When I was pregnant with our 1st child (almost 33 yrs ago) my husband & I went to Mackinac Island, MI
It is a beautiful, quaint, romantic place. They have the most beautiful hotel there. The Grand Hotel. It has a 660-foot porch that offers a magnificent view of the Straits of Mackinac and the 5-mile-long bridge that spans it. BUT the best part is NO CARS, only horses/carriages/bikes/beautiful walks & very romantic & old world charm, + best fudge in the world !! What ever U pick, good luck with conceiving. Babies have a way of deciding just when they want to come along. Sue PS--If U R at all interested, E me directly & I can send U a wonderful full page article that was just in our local paper. PSS--NEVER LISTEN TO A THING THAT "paul" HAS TO SAY. HE THINKS HE IS AN EXPERT ON THE WHOLE WORLD!!! He sure led me down the wrong garden path when we went to Alaska this past July.

You might like to read the threads, of which I posted two myself, on "Just got engaged - Help me pick honeymoon destination!" also on this US forum. There are many suggestions for romantic destinations, some in the States, some further afield. Best of luck.

This little island sounds very romantic. Heard very good things about it and it is remote, not crowded

http://www.littlepalmisland.com/

Regarding Mackinac Island - you could rent the movie "Somewhere In Time" with Christopher Reeves & Jane Seymour. It takes place in the 1800's on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel. Never been there myself, but after seeing the movie, would love to.

Phyllis Aug 31st, 1999 04:49 PM

Never done this myself, but I always thought renting a sailboat down the coast (either east or west) would be quite fine. I think you can get ones with a crew or without.

Michelle - Mackinaw Island is perfect I live in Michigan and its quite nice in May. Went for our anniversary there two years ago. In June and July it gets a little more crowded. The island is Eight miles around. Alot of secluded areas and nice walks. The weather is usually in the mid to high 70's. To get to the island you take a ferry over from Mackinac City. If you fly to Michigan the nearest airport is Pellston but many fly into Traverse City another beautiful beach town nearby with golf resorts etc. On the island the most luxurious resort is the Grand Hotel. For me its a little stuffy though. Mission Point is still considered an upscale resort without the stuffiness. The rooms are very nice and beds VERY comfortable with down featherbeds. Whereever you decide GOOD LUCK! Me and my hubby are still trying!

Michelle,
What ever happened?!? I hope all is well. I stumbled upon this thread searching for lighthouse bed and breakfasts; now, I'd love to hear what you decided.

This post is from the Clinton Administration era.
Doubt Michelle's still hanging around on a daily basis.

Michelle probably has 3 or 4 kids by now.

While staying in Austin, Michelle and her husband stopped at a Stop and Shop, bought some cigarettes and on impulse, a Lottery Ticket.
The won the lottery and moved to Europe where they own vineyards and have 6 children.
You can buy their wine is some of the better wine stores here in the US..

The Southern California coast is aweful in June and the beginning of July...and yes, I live here.
I agree with sedona. Alma de Sedona Inn. Gigantic whirlpool bathtub, private patio, awesome views, great breakfast every morning...perfect.
