"Straight" B and B in Key West
Can anyone recommend a b and b in Key West that does not cater to gays? I think my husband would feel pretty uncomfortable ina place where we were the only straight couple.

Try Island City House, www.islandcityhouse.com. Accepts children and is very nice.
Fran- if your husband has a homophobia problem, you should definitely consider an alternate destination!! <BR>Better yet, consider an alternative husband - guys who are "uncomfortable" around gays often tend to be either secretly dealing with their own same-sex cravings (and the most likely to engage in the riskiest kinds of anonymnous sexual encounters) or just plain bigots.

You know, I would like to give Fran the benefit of the doubt here. (Doesn't happen often though) <BR> <BR>The first year my husband and I travelled to Key West I looked at a long list of B&Bs/Guesthouses. I dealt mostly over the internet, sending emails to the ones I was interested in...well, I decided upon Eden House (a very nice, quaint place off the main drag, but about 5 blocks from Duval.) We loved it so much we have returned every year since. (Fran, you could look into them. <BR>http://www.edenhouse.com <BR> <BR>Anyway, the point here is this: there were two guesthouses whom I inquired with who were very blunt (and rude in my opinion) about how uncomfortable I would feel at their place with my husband since they catered to gay/lesbian couples. When I learned that all guesthouses are not for all people I changed the wording in my emails to include the question if a heterosexual couple would be welcome. (The reply for Eden was that ALL people are welcome...enough for me to like the place!) <BR> <BR>So, lets just assume Fran does not want to end up at a place where she does not feel free to express her heterosexuality as equally as others may express their homosexuality. <BR> <BR>Or maybe I am wayyyy of track here and Fran's husband is homophobic. :-) <BR> <BR>Sheli

Try the Key West Innkeeper's Association. (keywestinns.com) Their number is 888/539-4667. <BR> <BR>They are a central reservation service for member B&B's. They can help you find a place based on what location, price, and amenities you want. <BR> <BR>They helped us find a great place. However, we did not ask about the gay thing because we didn't care.
I think it would be hard to "stumble" upon a gay B&B. These inns establish the fact that the clientele is gay in a very upfront manner. If the website doesn't mention "for men only" or "a resort for women" or something like that, then you should feel pretty comfortable. Key West isn't nearly the gay destination as everyone makes it out to be on this board, by the way. It's simply a fun place with a large gay population, much like many major U.S. cities.

The Heron House is a great place, very nice and well run.
Fran how could you (or your husband) feel comfortable using the same bathroom facilities and eating off the same utensils of a 90% gay hostelry?
Go to www.keywestparadise.com The majority of the guesthouses and B&B's in KW have info there or links to their websites and the listings are separated into those that market themselves to a gay clientele and those that do not market to any specific sector of the population. Plenty to choose from for everyone and you're sure to enjoy KW.

Well, excuse me for asking for a recommendation for a place where a straight couple would feel comfortable. My request has nothing to do with homophobia. As one of the posters has stated, there are places in Key West that make it clear they would prefer to have gay couples as guests.
Fran, your question is somewhat insulting and if you don't understand why then you never will. It would have been very easy to simply ask for a "B&B suggestion for a married couple" and leave the gay issue out of it completely. In fact, I suggest that you would have received better responses had you phrased it that way! <BR> <BR>And Ho, just think about this. You encounter gay people every day whether you know it or not. Or whether you like it or not. And yes, you've used those same utensils thousands of time!

i feel i must pipe in, i live in key west, next door to a gay guest house, i am in no way homophobic, however, i have witnessed very open sexual behavior that would makes me uncomfortable and would still if it were straight couples. it is wise to understand where you are going to stay.
Now that's a switch. Someone other than the gay militia who actually chimes in with comments about sexual behavior in KW. A first hand report of possibly offensive sexual behavior in KW? I believe it's taboo to mention that such behavior occurs in KW, right? And shouldn't it be welcomed everywhere?

On my last visit to Key West a fat ugly woman and her pimply boyfriend were making out in a hammock next to our room. Let's not throw stones here.
Fran has every right to ask this question. Those of you who are criticizing her are good examples of PC-ness gone wrong. If Fran were a gay person asking where to find a nice B&B for a homosexual couple, would anyone have criticized her? Not likely. <BR> <BR>Give it a rest, people!!!
Well since most of the responces seem to be giving political views instead of answering the question, let me try to help. Most any B&B in Key West, gay or not, will probably have some gay couples. But if you are looking for a place that is totally straight, I suggest a different destination. As far as myself, I would recommend the Heron House. We stayed there in March and it was a great place. By the way, mostly straight.
Hey Politically Incorrect, what do you think of the post below? All I did is change a few words... <BR> <BR>"Can anyone recommend a b and b in Key West that does not cater to white people? I think my husband would feel pretty uncomfortable ina place where we were the only black couple."
yes, since this has taken on a politically correct tone, several guest houses advertise themselves as male or female in an attempt to disuade straight couples from staying. i have always taken great offense at this blatant attempt to discriminate.
"Can anyone recommend a B&B in Key west which caters to LEPERS?" <BR> <BR>ummm....I think I'll avoid that one, thanks.
Hey jp - <BR>Key West has a non discrimination ordinance, so if you really wanted to stay at an all male B&B there, I'm sure you could. But if you do and you're a man - don't get pissed off when I stare at your butt. And if you're a woman - don't get pissed off when I make fun of your shoes.
