storm king

Sounds like a tv show from the fifties about a guy and his plane but it's actually an outdoor sculpture museum in new York off 87 a couple hours north of nyc.

We came here after a week in bethany beach, the ferry from lewes to cape may, a visit and swim with a friend in croton on hudson, leaving ds at his school in vermont, and a night at an econolodge.

The econolodge was not so nice but storm king is wonderful. It's a really beautiful place with winding stone fences, a three legged giant Buddha, sculptures by David smith, rolling hills by may a lin, columns, and many m asny other cool giant sculptures.

The three legged Buddha bends over backward and rests one foot on his head, which is otherwise not connected to his body. This would be a difficult yoga position.

Storm King is a pleasant place to contemplate the preciousness of now.

Glad to have your voice added to tje frequently praise of this site, which many of us consider the premier place to visit in the Hudson Valley!

IMDonehere Sep 7th, 2014 06:38 PM

Yes, when we lived in the Lower Hudson Valley, it was our favorite place to visit.

yestravel Sep 7th, 2014 06:51 PM

Wonderful place. We were just there last month and I loved it.

Enjoyed our visit last fall.

They must have a center where concerts are produced too? I think I just saw that one of my favorite bands (The Felice Brothers) will be performing there in September.

Here's a link to the concert suki mentioned:

I would assume that the concert is outdoors since there is no concert hall or other type of building for such a performance. That makes it all the more attractive and inviting!

Wow! Thank you! I have a little trip planned to the Hudson Valley and I'm adding this to the itinerary. It looks like a amazing place to go in the Spring

Now to take the trip...

We're not "art people" at all, and still, we loved Storm King, and would definitely visit again. My favorite installations were some of the winding stone walls.

Oh sf7307, Andrew Goldsworthy! He's an incredible artist (imho)

Check out this link, if you will.

I love the Icicle Star joined together with spit.

But further down is an ice spiral wrapped around a tree that's a little mystery.

We visited Storm King for the first time last summer and agree it is an amazing place. I would like to go back in the fall.

yestravel Sep 9th, 2014 05:23 AM

If you like Andy Goldsworthy check out his work in SF at the Presido

Another fan of Storm King. It would be amazing to go in October to add fall colors to the mix.

sf7307 Sep 9th, 2014 10:25 AM

yestravel, I had no idea those existed. I am a fan of "art in nature" - like the installations at Storm King, and in particular, "Wood Line" at the Presidio. I'm putting this on my "to do" list!

HowardR Sep 9th, 2014 01:27 PM

Yes, Storm King is indeed spectacular during the fall foliage season.
