Stopping Points Between Charleston and Gettysburg
 

We are going to drive to Charleston and Savannah at the end of March. We are stopping for one night in Richmond on the way down. My husband wants to stay at the Jefferson Hotel.

We need a stopping point on the way back. My husband does not want to go to Williamsburg. Also, if we went to Charlottesville, he'd want to spend several days there, instead of just the one day we have. Any other good stopping points in NC or VA in late March?

I don't know if your routing would take you through Winston-Salem. It is on I-40. It has an absolutely marvelous restored section, Old Salem, which makes for a lovely place to tour. We also have a lively arts district, good symphony and some great restaurants.

FM, I see from your Savannah post you are interested in gardens. I recommend you read "Mrs Whaley's Charleston Garden" during your Charleston visit. It is available in most Charleston bookstores and at the historical society. A wonderful introduction to Charleston and its gardens!

Durham or Chapel Hill are basically on the route home. Both have charming and historic downtown areas with boutique shops and good dining options. Both towns have great gardens. I would recommend the Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham although the NC Botanical Gardens are in Chapel Hill.
If you wanted to get into VA, try Fredericksburg. Smaller town but very convienent to 95. Also has a historic downtown with shops and restaurants.
