stopping point Phila-maine
mapquest says it is 430 miles from Phila area to Freport and 6.5 hours. Since I assume we can't drive 70 miles an hour the whole time how is this possible? Besides Boston is there somewhere halfway to stop for an overnigher? Thanks

It's 6 hours 53 minutes; not 6.5 hours.
Average is only slightly over 60, while speed limit is 65 in some parts of the route.
Still, that estimate doesn't not consider traffic; so you can do that in 7 hours if you drive speed limit in the middle of the night, but not any other time of the day.
What do you want at your halfway stop point? There are places to stay and eat virtually every other exit along the whole route...

I live in Philly, too and make the trip all the way up to Acadia National Park each year in about 10 hours. Its always about 6 hours to Boston. We go the diagonal route through New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and then through Mass. and up to New Hampshire--then into Maine. As for a stopping place --you could stop in Hartford, Conn. if all you want is a town to explore and a place to eat. My recommendation --if you want to see a really nice area on your way up the coast --is to detour into Mass. and go to Cape Ann. I know it is off the route a little --but it is a beautiful area. If I may ask --why are you going to Freeport? Shopping ? Visiting friends? or just using it as a base for further exploration? I think a lot of Maine's more scenic areas lie a little farther north.

We live in Maine & drive to the Southeast quite a bit so the drive to Philly is just a snack to us !! I would leave around 5 in the morning - you would be in Freeport between 12 & 2 depending on the traffic.
