There are a lot of hotels at the Concord exit on I-85. I can't think of any that are more than five years old.

If you want something to do, I'd stay Uptown. If you are just looking for someplace to stop, Concord will suffice.

If you're just looking for a quick stop, I agree the Concord area is best - aside from all the hotels, there is one of those "Mills" malls there, along with the usual satellite restaurants, etc. If you are looking for something to do in the evening besides shopping, aside from the uptown area that was mentioned, you could also consider downtown - there are quite a few restaurants, bars, etc., along Tryon St.

So as not to confuse the OP, Uptown & downtown are the same. However, native Charlotteans refer to the central area of the city as "Uptown" as it does tend to sit at a higher elevation than the surrounding neighborhoods. There is some additional 'folkloric' reasons which I don't recall. But it is properly referred to as "Uptown".

Oh, sorry, W, and thanks for straightening that out. I thought you were referring to the area around the University. I've been to Charlotte a number of times to visit clients (bankers, of course), and I think it's really a nice place.

If I were picking, I'd choose the Dunhill. An older, historical property right in the middle of things.

We are looking for hotel recommendations. We will be arriving at 10 P.M. at the Charlotte airport and then heading to Pinehurst the next day in a rental car. We would like a decent 3* hotel for one night where we can have dinner at a nearby restaurant and then head out leisurely the next morning. We haven’t figured out the route to Pinehurst yet, as we are trying to decide on a hotel first. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

There are prior posts on here that wil provide some detail around Pinehurst. You were driving, but now you are flying ? At that late hour, I'd likely go cheap, just don't stay out near the Airport.

Not sure when you were planning on coming or if you already have, but as far as decent, affordable hotels in uptown that are relatively new: The courtyard by marriott is on Tryon and the Hampton Inn is on MLK (2nd st)... if you want to pay a little more- the Marriott and Hilton are nice, but the Westin is nicer. The Dunhill has much more of a quaint feel- it is historic and superbly located on Tryon (I don't particularly love their restaurant though- The MOnticello).

Monticello has been on the decline since Paul (the prior Chef)left 1 1/2-2 years ago. It used to be one of my favorite 'secret' spots in CLT.

No question at all! Stay at the Westin in uptown. We were there for one night to break up the trip from DC to Hilton Head. We had our dog with us, and we all had a WONDERFUL evening. Plenty of good restaurants and nightlife in walking distance too.

coming late to this and I think we are now dealing with two people--one coming late and going to PH and another passing through.
If you want to stay downtown (it is only the Chamber that gets uppity about saying "uptown"), I would bid on a 4* hotel, uptown, on Priceline.
If the people are arriving at 10PM and looking for a place to eat in town, it may be a hard thing to come by. A real restaurant will not be open.
The route to Pinehurst will be the same no matter where you stay. Route 74 east.
For passing through it depends on if you want to come into town, or SouthPark to go to a hotel,or just "pass through".

Depends on what you want. Big national luxury chain is Westin...cool older boutique is Dunhill.....Dunhill is right on Tryon st
