stopover between Asheville and Charleston

I will be spending 2 nights in Asheville in the fall and then going to Charleston South Carolina for 4 nights. Is there aa interesting/charming place in between the two cities that would be a good overnight or should I just travel directly from Asheville to Charleston?

Both ciites are great. Spend the night in either city and just do the 4 hour drive in between. Have breakfast in one city and lunch in the other.

In the fall there are a lot of places just south of Asheville that would be wonderful -- but not that far. Hendersonville, Brevard, Saluda, and Flat Rock areas come to mind. Hendersonville has lots of B&B's, antiques, and crafts. If you wanted to do a bit of scenic driving and spend a night in one of those areas, that would be nice. As elliesmom says the drive to Charleston isn't all that much regardless. Between? Columbia, not terribly charming in my book.

No reason to stop in between.

There's some nice scenery just south of Asheville. You have the choice of stopping somewhere or driving straight through and spending the time you save in Charleston. For a four hour trip, it really doesn't make sense to try for an overnight stop.

Just drive along, if you see something that interests, then stop for a little while. Before you know it, you will be in Charleston.

I agree with the previous posters. You didn't mention any special interests, but Transylvania County, NC (near the town of Cashiers) has more than 100 waterfalls. Very picturesque. Assuming you are taking I-26 to the coast, there isn't anything remarkable along the way. Columbia, SC - even though it's the capital and home of U of SC - isn't worth the stop. Frankly, I'd maximize my time in the two cities and not bother stopping elsewhere.

Thanks so much for all of your advice. We will do as you suggested!

Newberry SC is halfway. There is a nice town square with an opera house. Check out what is playing then you might be suprised. There is a fairly new Hampton Inn on the square if you do decide to stay. There are about a half dozen really good places to eat with Stephen W's the best.

If you like flowers check out Carter and Holmes. It is one the the largest orchid growers.
