Steubenville to Pitt. Commute?

Am thinking of looking in the Pittsburgh area for a job, but am thinking about living in Steubenville....

- How far of a commute would it be (I would probably be working in the downtown area)? It looks like around 40 miles....

- Is public transportation (i.e. a park-and-ride situation from a suburb) a viable alternative to driving the entire distance?

- How bad would the commute be? That Fort Pitt tunnel doesn't look great....

Any Pittsburgh/Steubenville/Weirton people out there? Thanks!

I live in Pittsburgh.. Am curious why you're not considering living in or around Pittsburgh. It's really a very livable city with fairly reasonable housing. If you don't have it already, you may want to get a copy of the Pittsburgh Magazine Guide to the city. I don't know too much about commuting - I work 3 miles from home. There is rush hour traffic and delays, especially at tunnels, although perhaps not quite as bad as some cities.

Judy:

There are a couple of reasons that I am thinking aboot Steubenville, but the 2 main ones are:

- Low cost of living. While I''m sure Pittsburgh is reasonable compared to Philly, etc., I have a feeling that Steubenville would still be cheaper.

- Small-town atmosphere. I'm not a city or suburbs kind of a person, so it just seems like Steubenville would be a better fit for me.

But I appreciate your comments! Thanks!

Steubenville is a town that used to be more thriving than it has been in recent years. It's more of a steel factory small city than it is a "small town USA" kind of place. You should expect at least a 45 minute commute to downtown Pittsburgh and at rush hour, with the traffic back-ups in the tunnels, it will take longer. There are a lot of small towns north of Pittsburgh that offer interstate access. Route 22 between Steubenville and Pittsburgh is mostly four-lane, but it's not all limited access and there are traffic problems.
