Steppenwolf play and tip for lower priced tickets

Hi, Fodorites.

For those visiting Chicago, wanted to post about this play. I’d worked a decade at Steppenwolf so have a little insight into the caliber of shows and their ticketing, so wanted to recommend Little Bear Ridge Road and their day-of-show discount: 20 for 20.

Saw the play last week, and it’s pretty wonderful. Laurie Metcalf stars, Joe Mantello directed. (Mantello is a multi-Tony-nominated director.) 95 minutes, no intermission. Wonderfully acted, superb playwriting. I don’t want to say too much, but it’s funny, and sad, and just a lovely, human play. And Laurie Metcalf is the greatest on stage.

Now through July 7th may be a great time to go as many subscribers have other plans, and turn back seats. Will be harder to get $20 seats after, but still possible.

So if interested, I recommend calling day of the show. Call the box office (312-335-1650) at 11:58-11:59 am and hold for their noon sale, and ask if they have any “Twenty for Twenty” tickets left. Offer to sit apart, if needed.

I bought a single ticket at 3:30 pm and got one. (I ended up 6th row center. A turned-back subscriber seat.) Don’t bother asking where tickets are—they may assign them at the last minute. There is truly NO BAD SEAT in this theater—even last row balcony on the outer aisle is a fantastic, intimate view. Only mention if you need accessible seats. Hope some of you can see this wonderful play.

Can be combined with dinner beforehand at Vinci, or Boka, or Summerhouse on Halsted.

I'm seeing Goodman's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil soon, too. Hopefully, this will also be good.

I thought this was gonna be about the band. So glad I clicked. I love me a 90 minute no intermission play!!!

Me, too! 95 intense minutes. Feels like the Steppenwolf of old to me (except for the prices).

I also just watched the new musical at the Goodman Theatre, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Absolutely fantastic, so two nights of theater in a row that were stellar. (Actually, three, as I saw TJ and Dave at the Goodman two nights afterwards.) Hopefully this musical will transfer as it deserves to be seen with this cast. The actor who plays Lady Chablis, J. Harrison Ghee, is a tony-winner, and extraordinary. You couldn't take your eyes off them. Honestly, I don't like everything I see--there's been lots of misses the past couple years since theater started back up again, post-covid--but it's such a joy to Chicago theater coming back.
