Steakhouse in new york theatre district
 

Can anyone recommend a place to get great steak in the theatre district? Price is not a concern, quality is key.

I had a very good meal at Frankie and Johnnys Steakhouse.

This is so funny. The two WORST meals I had in that area were at Frankie and Johnny's (where the steaks were excellent, but the service and all the other food were BAD. Can you say icey cooked spinach and dried out cold potatoes as well as watered down drinks?) and at Gallagher's (where all four of us had tough and fatty steaks with gristle and a rude waiter from the start).
I'd go to Cite for really good steaks, although not technically a steak house. I love Michael Jordan's and Smith and Wollensky -- but neither are really in the theatre district. Haven't been to Del Frisco's but hear only raves.

I agree with Patrick in recommending Cite. One other, which is within walking distance of the theater district are is Ben Benson's on West 52nd between 6th & 7th Avenues.

Sparks Steakhouse ... great steaks. I think it's on 46th in between 2nd and 3rd.

Wonderful, casual steak house where you're almost guaranteed to see some stars.

I've seen Patti Lupone, Mathew Broderick & Sarah Jessica Parker on various visits.

I had a blast last time as my dining partner was seated with a limited view. I kept teasing all night with faux star sightings: "Oh my gosh! Kitty Carlisle just walked in!"

Fun place with great Steak Frites.

While I love Joe Allen's too, I'd hardly call it a steak house in the New York tradition. I think they have one steak on the menu, which is OK, but I doubt that's what jomale is looking for here.

While I've not been to Spark's, Cher has reminded me of the one I somehow keep missing.

Spark's is excellent, but a healthy walk to the theater district--seven long blocks (over 3/4 of a mile).
Joe Allen's for great steak? Forget it.

I haven't been but there's Shula's Steak House in the Westin Times Square too. Keen's on 36th b/w 5th-6th is another very good one that's not too far. Olde world NYC.

I consider myself a near-expert at steakhouses in NY.

1) Sparks is the best...but a bit of a ways from the theater district.

2) In the near area I'd go with Del Frisco's...fantastic steaks if not quite as good as Sparks

3) Even though its (horrors) a chain the west side Palm is very, very good. Fantastic wait staff and I've never had a bad steak there.

4) Cite is pretty good but they are mostly known for their unlimited wine promotion

5) Another chain, Ruth's Chris isn't bad...again I've never had a bad steak there.

6) Smith and Wollensky...a bit far away from theaters but usually good, I've had some inconsistent meals there.

As for what I would not recommend:

Gallagher's...living on reputation alone...last couple of times we went there the steak wasn't just not good, it was bad. Poor wait staff, half empty dining room, it needs a complete workover.

Frankie and Johnnys....touristy

Joe Allen....touristy, yeah you might see a few celebrities here and there but the place just seems cheesy.

We had a delicious dinner at Shulas in May. Plan on returning in December!

Del Frisco's !! A must! It is well worth every dollar you spend. It is aged Texas prime beef. So delicious! It's on 6th and I believe 49th. (Next to the Fox News Channel)

Take a cab and go to Spark's. You'll be glad you did. It's a short cab ride back to most theatres.

Big thumbs down on Gallaghers. Only time I was there was about two years ago, but I would never go back. Food was OK (nothing special) but service was poor and the place was extremely noisy. Not a good choice for dinner with the significant other. Seemed to cater more to large groups or families.

I have been to both Sparks and the Old Homestead in the past. Both are excellent, but a distance from the theatre district. I believe Ruth Chris' is close/in the theatre district, but I am not a Ruth Chris' fan either, although I would go there before Gallaghers. I would also give a thumbs down to Ben Benson's which has been mentioned in other threads. Two terrible meals there.

We had a great dinner at Ben Benson's and also love Shula's in the Westin TS.
