Staying on Schoodic Peninsula?
I will be in Maine for 4- 5 days in early September. I found what looks to be a lovely oceanfront B&B on the Schoodic Peninsula.
I like the idea of being "off the beaten path" and away from the crowds and I will probably stay in the area at least half the time, but I do want to see Acadia/Bar Harbor and spend some time there as well. I know it's a 45 minute drive to the Bar Harbor/Acadia area, but does anyone know what the road is like? Is it a pleasant, scenic drive that I wouldn't mind doing RT each day? And does anyone know about the ferry that goes between the two? Is it for cars or just people? Or would it be wiser to stay closer to Bar Harbor and do Schoodic as a day trip? TIA. |
The drive from Schoodic to Bar Harbor is about an hour and 15 min., too far to go back and forth. (It's about 45 miles, not minutes.) And the ferry is only passengers, I believe.(http://www.downeastwindjammer.com/bar-harbor-ferry/)
There are areas of Mt. Desert (the island on which most of Acadia is located) that are away from crowds (which, incidentally decrease significantly after Labor Day). Check out lodging in Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor, rather than Bar Harbor. You will be on the "Quiet Side" but within a 15-30 min. drive to everything Acadia offers. Do Schoodic as a day trip. (Unless by "early Sept." you mean Labor Day, in which case you probably won't find lodging available on Mt. Desert at this point!) |
I second getowt's comments.
Plus, the drive between them is OK, but not especially scenic. ~Liz |
I appreciate the info.
I am actually arriving on Labor Day, 9/5, and will depart on the 9th or 10th. I just checked some B&B's on Mt. Desert and they are already pretty well booked, even for the week after Labor Day! I will check out SW and Bass Harbor. "Quiet side" and close enough sounds perfect. Thanks to both of you for your help. |
You're welcome! Just had another idea if you really like "off the beaten path": http://www.swansisland.com/ It's a half-hour ride via car ferry to Acadia/Mt. Desert.
